Those subscribed to the SBG newsletter will have just gotten the digest email... and it contained info on a very interesting new project by SBG. sbg-sword-store.sword-buyers-guide.com/forge-direct.htmlBasically, Paul and co. can buy (1) direct from the smiths [cutting out the middleman, I'm assuming - though of course SBG IS also a middleman], and (2) ship it anywhere in the world via EMS. Recently I've gained an interest in Chinese swords (reading through Timo's links does that to you), so I'm planning a possible purchase sometime soon. Which brings me to my question: what do you guys think? Honestly the Horsebane Dao looks very very tempting to me (it's like a more graceful Moro Panabas). I also like the Shu Jian's simple elegance and power. Anyone think this is gonna be a relative bargain? Looks custom-quality in some shots. Hopefully someone reviews this.

Those look nice, but for those prices I would be shopping for antiques. I want my cutters to be $300 or less in general.
Just my opinion.

The Qin jian looks nice, but good ones are already out there for about $500 (and with diamond-section blades, which I'd prefer). Perhaps the $200 ones are adequate? The $500 and $1200 ones are probably better. The Shu Jian is basically a bronze jian done in steel. Most have much shorter hilts, but this length hilt with this length blade has been found (first Qin emperor's tomb, iirc). They look OK. I've seen much worse at that kind of price. As Eric said, I'd rather get an antique instead, for that price, and cheaper repros. I like the Shu Jian myself. I like simple designs like Jian has. But to pay that price I would prefer to the blade length to be at least 32-33 inches. Might not be historically accurate but I am more on the getting inspiration from the past to adapt to modern times. Like the blade design and material. One more thing that worries me is the Tang. Those Round Handles usually hides rat tail tangs but I am sure SBG will quality control them. Just would be nice if they can post a pics of the disassembled sword shopping the tang. If they have those specs and pics. I would be the first one to buy. Aslo would like the Spine and edge hardness posted so that I know that I have a decorative and functional piece for my peace of mind

Yeah. I feel that SBG would make sure it wasn't a rat tail tang, or even a bad weld, but you never know what might slip through the cracks. For that price, it definitely should be well-constructed.
