There are still some vendors with stock, try ebay also, or indeed The Samurai Workshop. And why would anyone choose hanwei over kaneie is beyond me, but that's just my opinion.

I have been impressed with Kaneie. The only detraction is their sayas. Sloppy fit at both ends. Hanwei has been much better. I have had to shim both of my Kaneies' sayas right at the start.

I wouldn't say that Alex to be honest.

I would. Only down point with kaneie are the saya, but the swords in general perform much better than any hanwei I ever handled, and they look much better. Bugei are still hanwei.

I wouldn't say that either. Kaneie aren't the worst but I'd take a high end hanwei or bugei over kaneie any day of the week. They just don't feel right in my hands.

These things are so subjective. I much prefer the Kaneie tsuka feel than any of the Hanwei tsuka I have held. I recommend trying both and see what shortfall bugs you the most. ;-)

The thing is it's subjective as has been said earlier. Swords are individuals and even the swords of same model can feel quite different from each other, you can read how Matthew Jensen felt about the 3 Hanwei Bamboo Mats he had. People I know who are highly ranked in martial arts usually say you will need to feel the sword in hand. I agree with this, you'll know if it fits you or not. Of course for many of us are buying swords online because of the lack of local availibility of swords. I know I've purchased multiple swords that I knew beforehand that will not fit my taste. Sometimes because I just want to see that particular sword, and I kinda knew in few cases I can flip the sword for small profit as swords aren't really that available in Finland. For example I got Hanwei Tiger because I got it for cheap and it's very expensive in Finland. I knew the sword will not fit me but I got the chance to see it and sold it. The fellow who I sold it to met with me and handled the sword and he liked it. I've done multiple local sales & trades where the buyer gets to see and handle the sword I'm selling. Usually they've liked the sword they will be buying. Sometimes the sword is not to liking and we've had to think about something else. For example, I got the Kaneie I owned by trade. Afterwards I regret it a bit even though I made good profit trading that Kaneie onwards. I got bit too hyped for a chance to get a Kaneie that I overlooked how it felt initially. Yes it was a good sword but felt like a clunker to me. Of course the rationalist in my head said I made a good trade but my heart said it was wrong to trade away that Last Legend... I've only owned one Bugei and I really liked that Bamboo. I sold it because I didn't need so expensive production sword because I'd rather invest that money on antiques. It felt like really good sword for me and it was a bummer to sell it. But for my cutting and using a 300$ sword is enough. The reason you'll see forumites in here go through 10's and 10's of different swords is because we are often seeking that well fitting one (martial artists), or find one for our overall liking (collectors). Then you find a sword that fits you well but you wonder if there will be a sword that will fit you better than that one you have now...

Feel for me is an absolute must as I am a martial artist. I don't have the money to test a sword before I buy it so I normally have to roll the dice with each purchase. It is the main reason why I go for customs or semicustoms, even from longquan. If you know your preferences and the capabilities of the smith or mounter you are buying from, you can get a great piece. If you like a blade but hate the mountings, you can get a remount later. You can also buy up some fittings and a blade and have yourself a nice project if you're craftsman inclined. It may take time and money but I'd rather spend my time and money on a really nice sword that feels right than a bunch of throw aways.

It is pretty subjective, I myself feel Kaneie's are much closer to true Nihonto than any Hanwei period and I have owned one of every Hanwei model with the exception of the L6's
Hanwei's saya and fittings are nicer in most cases, but it terms of blade geometry, polish, tsuka shape and quality, IMO Kaneie has them beat....

I'm really not a big fan of their blade geometry as an iaidoka. It just feels really bulky and awkward. Tsuka is mostly good stuff though. Felt a little tall even if in my larger hands.

Well, honestly I'm really not a fan of kaneie. They are good, but I don't see them as worth the price. Take away the polish and you have some good fittings and a blade that just feels awkward to me. If you want my 100% serious answer, get a different brand. High end hanswei are good but I hate their tsuka. So if you don't mind them, get one. Bugei is a good choice but I've never handled one personally. When it comes to me, I am very picky so I get customs from st-nihonto so I can get the specs exactly how I want them. Right now I'm waiting on sheng to finish a daisho with the dimensions of some nihonto. I wish I had the money to spend on a bugei to see how they feel. They look really well done. In the end, it really depends on what you want to use it for. If I remember correctly, you want to train with it and defend yourself if needed. A good sword from bugei, hanwei, or kaneie will do that, but kaneie and some hanwei are more cutters than training tools.

Get the centipede katana from cottontail customs. It has no equal in that price range in terms of fitness, beauty, and function.

I just want honest answers "It's subjective" is the most honest answer to the question "which is best?" that can possibly be given. Doesn't matter if you're asking about swords, headphones, cars, food, or anything else.

Eh... so subjective. In the end I guess I'll go for what looks nice like anyone would, and try it. I like their Royal Chrysanthemum I think, it's not made of K120C but none of Kaneie's is it looks like, and it's a fine looking sword to me. Tamahagane is truly something to look at, so there's that. I'm just so tired of subjective things... almost want someone to just tell me what's best. I'm currently also trying to buy headphones you see, and I'm buried over my head in Head-Fi.org and subreddits and junk now with all the "audiophiles" nagging at each other. I also want a new computer, now I'm in lengthy conversations about NVIDIA vs AMD and what not... ugh. Indecisiveness. You can probably tell that I am guilty of it and I need to learn to live with it instead of always trying to make the perfect choice. I hear people tell me about how bad they are about impulse buying, but sometimes I wish I could be a bit more impulsive so I don't spend a year on every choice I have to make. I will, however, need to message that guy though I think. Royal Chrysanthemum is listed as "Discontinued" everywhere now. I have a custom kaneie tamahagane blade. It's not unokubi like the chrysanthemum, but it is great. PM me if you're interested.
