I recently purchased a Kaneie Tatsumaki Katana - Okuden Class from the SBG scratch and dent sale for $329. As it is the Okuden class, it is not polished to a high degree, leaving the hamon lighter like a Huawei hazuya reverse polish. I was thinking of using some Mothers Mag polish and then doing a vinegar etch on it. Has anyone done something similar and what were the results. Kaneie Tatsukaki katana at KoA

You don't use mothers mag for bringing out the hamon. You need a slightly coarse fingerstones and proper technique. This is the best method to bring out the hamon. 600-1000 grit works too depending on the brand of abrasive.
Get some nugui mix, or already mixed for you. It's will give better results.
The traditional polishing process gives a 3d effect almost to a sword. Also by opening the steel with coarses stones, the etching of the nugui will be better.

When I first received my Huawei. After 2000 grit and Mother's Mag polish and vinegar etching. This is what I was thinking of trying on the Kaneie.

Jeffrey Ching ( The Samurai Workshop )doesn't recommend acid etching the hamon on "art polished" Kaneie swords, but you could ask him if it'll work on swords with a lesser polish on them.

When I got the Okuden grade Kaneie, it's finish reminded me of the Huawei I had etched. Before I etched it I had to polish off the finish on it with 2000 grit and Mothers.

I certainly wouldn't touch my art polished Kaneie Wave. It looks great. I am just not a fan of almost mirror polished hamon with the rest of the blade kind of frosty looking.

Consider the thirty five dollar investment in "the art of Japanese sword polishing" book. You can look at the pictures and decide what technique you wish to apply to the blade.
