You should check them out. Most HEMA groups are pretty friendly. And if not you can hit them with swords.

My plan is to collect a few examples of each type of sword that I want, then find as much literature on training/using them as possible. Ideally I'll be reading when I can, and training myself in my free time. I know this is not the proper way to learn, and leads to bad habits, etc. , but I'm doing it for exercise and fun, and to get a feel for the weapons themselves. I'm not old at 42, but I've gained too much weight in the past few years, and I've spent too much time doing non-physical activities, so I thought this would be a fun and interesting way to get some exercise, and get some of the muscle back. I used to be in very good shape, once upon a time.. While I may grab a sword to defend myself if it's the closest thing and I'm pressed for time, in most situations it would be the shotgun or one of several handguns I would choose for a violent encounter. If I were to train in a serious way in melee weapons, it would be knife fighting, as I always carry one around anyway, even if I am carrying a concealed pistol. I may change my mind as I go further into the hobby, though. HEMA looks interesting. I'm thinking just practicing with a claymore for an hour each day should be a pretty good workout
