Has anyone ever used a puck sharpener to start putting an edge? Not for the whole job, just to start. I would finish with whet stones, and I was probably going to give the whole blade a matt finish with 600 grit or so sandpaper (those mirror finish blades scare the neighbors when I wave em in the backyard at night, ha ha)

I only ask because I have some neck and shoulder issues. I can't be hunched over stones for hours and I can't afford a harbor freight belt sander (3 kids and a Dutch wife,ha ha. Consider me broke). Used a Lansky puck on my axes and thought it might be a good way to get the "rough draft" of an edge. I have seen the sharpening info, just curious about your thoughts since you guys rock.

Sure you can, although it won't be any less work than any other stone of equal coarseness. Should work just fine, though. If you're actually establishing the edge geometry rather than just sharpening an existing edge, personally I'd start with a good file rather than a stone.
You might want to consider a standing desk or similar elevated work platform that lets you stand up straight, too, that should be easier on your neck and shoulders.
