I have a utility knife. Also if your defending yourself is reserved for that one unique position where running simply wont work and should be done as a surprise just like the initial attack on you was.

They are out there, do some searching. No doubt, prices will be going up. There are a few dealers that have had a few. Mine was $225 a dozen years ago.
Search Ebay for Steketee or Stek if looking for a folded steel bowie. He lists his stuff there. Long track record.

This is probably true, but not always. People used these in the past to deal with similar situations so I believe they are still effective.

Eh, I think, perhaps, it was a bit different...but do your thing.

Eh, I think, perhaps, it was a bit different...but do your thing. :-X I mean I'm sure lots of dueling and backstabbing happened to, you gotta admit though it was probably a convenient self defense tool to deal with street robbers in the old west because it was vastly cheaper than an expensive six shooter.

@ Justin520 At 76 and with some street experience a knife would be the last thing I’d carry for defence. I carry two everyday as a tool. A pistol got me out of a tight three times. Came up against a knife twice, neither time did I have a weapon. My take away worked on one, surprisingly. Me being unarmed he underestimated me. The other time ended in a stand-off until the cops came and carried the robber away. I had to draw the blade from my sword cane once and was glad that I had it. For the last several years I’ve been carrying wooden canes and they are proving to be my all time favourites, and I take one over a knife any day for defence. I’ve beat off several dogs of both two leg and four legged variety. Not only are they great weapons they are a handy tool to have. They are also legal any where due to international law declaring them a medical device and it’s always in my hand at the ready attracting no attention. Talking about surprise, you’ve got one with a cane.
@ Edelweiss that is a nice looking knife you have there.

I've always gone with the idea that if somebody pulls a knife on me, it would be stupid to respond in kind. If I can't talk him down, I'd just as soon try my odds at gaining control of his knife, rather than trying to get my own. I've had a little practice at this, many years ago, but odds are I'd wind up bleeding one way or the other. I'd rather get the other guy's knife dirty, though. Canes are good, but I keep thinking I'd read that some places have gotten strict on "orthopedic" canes being a distinct category against "cane" and there are some places that consider anything not clearly needed for walking as a weapon...but I never can seem to find a source or any form of backup on that, so I'll just go with "walk softly and carry a big stick" as the famous quote goes. Some of the older folk 'round here came up in very different worlds (and parts of it) than us younger folk are living in now, eh pgandy?

Is Europe so different than America in such regards?

If we talk about Europe we say the country. Don't lump us all togather. Things happen in europe too that don't make sense the people here.
Bill that was mean.

I live in Central America and not the US. By saying "American continent" i em-globed all of them, making confusion impossible as i was not being specific, yet remaining correct. How are you enjoying life in central America? Terrible bureaucracy i hear... must be a pain :S.

How are you enjoying life in central America? Terrible bureaucracy i hear... must be a pain :S. I love it. Finally found my place in the sun. It has become more civilized since my arrival. That’s progress I suppose but I like the older ways in many respects more. I guess you might say life is more technically advanced which I like. The new laws and more people I do not. There are many types of animals that I no longer see. Many dirt roads are now paved and new roads are curved through the mountains. Crop lands that use to be there are now housing and businesses. I think the days of running down a rat, or mouse, and giving a whack with my machete are gone. I did take some out with my blowpipe but those days are gone also.
