I have no experience with Universal and only have viewed photos of their swords online. They appear to go in for stamping and I think in some cases etching. Perhaps in real life the end result is more attractive than in the photos which do not impress me. In some cases, as is with this sword, the stamping comes very close to the sword’s edge. So close in fact that after sharpening some of the stamping is erased. What is your thought on this?
Nice photos of drawings and history. Thanks.

Thanks for the review. Can't say the handling surprises me - it looks like such an awkward weapon just by itself

Still - rather encouraging to see Universal putting out new product thats not half bad. Their blue and gilt sabre also looks promising, but at that price its an expensive gamble....

Thanks for the review Dave. In the second picture of the original it looks like a lot of tapering is going on. Could be lens destortion though. Would not surprise me if the original went from 10 - 11mm to 2mm. It's a butchers implement.

About the blue and gild sabre: I am quite sure it is from Empire Costume. Mr. Guinhut hinted at certain developements last year and Universal makes the Empire hilts to Mr. Guinhuts specs. Also, at the moment Mr. Guinhut is the only one who can output blue and gild blades of constant quality on an industrial scale. I do not know what KOA charges for shipping in the US but the total could be under the price of ordering one directly from Empire for people outside Europe.

I thought the resemblance was uncanny, though I was also under the impression that Empire Costume's products were supposed to be exclusive to their store (at least the newer stuff). Maybe Universal Swords will start offering some of the other Empire Costume collaborations at KoA - save a lot on shipping for us here in the new world

I think Universal is sounding out the US / Canadian market with one model. I hope for you guys that it will be a succes, for Mr. Guinhut too of course. Just imagine the costs he had to shoulder to get his project of the ground. Two years before a single sabre to sell! Two years work before the forge could deliver constant high quality in numbers. I bet Mr. Guinhut had some sleepless nights over this. I think Empire Costume gets some extra percentage from Universal who then may market the sabres under their brand name. Up until now there is nobody who can do the same, not in Europe, not anywhere else. So that still makes it an exclusive Empire project. Universal did not make a big fanfare out of the new sabre, or I missed that. Suddenly it was there. Why? Anyway, if you were to go out now and buy the thing, I mean buy 10, Dave will have to stop his endless muttering about high shipping rates. Do us all a favour Afoo, please.

Hmm - if only their new offering didn't look so....strange (or expensive, in the case of their blue and gilt sabre). If they had their heavy cavalry stuff, or even the napoleonic briquet (the one with leather handles - not the cheap all brass one) I would give it a shot. I have never owned an Empire Costume piece, but I would very much like to
EDIT: Now that I look at it, that blue and gilt sabre is lloking very attractive.....Grrrr! >:(

Nice review, honestly good looking model of sword this one and one of the rarest ever to find of the Imperial Guard. Shame that Indian manufacturer have still not understood the problems with their weapons. I wonder how better is the one from Empire Costume. Links to original models: Sabre matelots
