So, I am wondering about the legality of transporting or carrying a sword. First off I imagine it varies from state to state but I would assume generally you would not be able to carry a sword around on your person in public.
But what about in your car? Would it by similar to a gun as in if you were to be pulled over I would imagine it would need to be in your trunk or you are going to be arrested. (I realize if you have a concealed carry permit that changes things for a gun)
Am I right?

It really depends on the situation AND the state/municipality you're travelling in. In most cases, it could be considered a concealed weapon, so it would have to be in a lockable case imho. I carry my iaito to class in it's decorative sword bag, but should really carry it in a case to be on the safe side. Here's a website that might help you determine what's best in your situation blogs.findlaw.com/blotter/2014/02/is-it-legal-to-carry-a-sword-in-public.html

IF a swords is in a sheath and sword bag that tried close it's that same a long gun(rifle or shotgun) it would be cased. I can put my long gun in a gun sock(sword bag for a gun) it makes it lawful in a gun case(federal law) also federal law allow for the transport of weapons for lawful use like hunting, sport, or other things along those lines. But still check the laws in your state and what kind of cops you have. As freddie gray showed just because you blade is lawful does mean you can be arrested or kill because of it. Most of the shoots I have asked said most times they said they going to a class and there no problmes.
