Quick question- I have a tang I need to peen, search told me a butane micro-torch won't get it hot enough. I got a Mapp gas torch from Lowes yesterday, but before I use it I'm wondering; is that going to get the steel too hot too fast? Any advice would be appreciated.

Don't know too much about it, but i use a mapp gas torch at home for soldering and melting pewter for castings. I wouldn't think it would get it too hot, but don't take my word on it... Its all in how hot you have the torch running and where you are pointing the flame.

Be sure to clamp the tang in a heavy metal vise to help draw heat away before it reaches the blade and ruins the temper. Your better off heating it quickly so you don't end up getting the whole blade hot.
