Hello, I have a Japanese sword which has been in my family for more than a century and I wish to identify it. Longueur total Length total : 64cm Longeur de la Tsuka Length of Tsuka : 15,5cm Diamètre de la Tsuba Diameter of Tsuba : 7cm Epaisseur de la Tsuba Thickness of Tsuba : 0,4cm I have posted the photo on another forum and was told that it is a wakizashi (of poor quality) of "rebellion of Satsuma". Since that I've disasembled the Tsuka and have discovered that it is not of origin, a new hole was drilled in the blade to permit its assembly, this new hole was made before 1900. Thus I'm trying to identify the origin of the blade and the Tsuba. I found a photo of a another Tsuba with an identical flower but I don't understand Japanese. (LINK)Is it possible that this Tsuba is from a period between 1675 and 1750? I tried to decode the signature of the blade, it is true? 1-Kanji : 武 ? (It is possible that this the one?) 2-Kanji : 州 ? (It is possible that this the one?) 3-Kanji: 下 4-Kanji: 原 5-Kanji: 住 (Ju) [Resident of] 6-Kanji: 正 7-Kanji: 重 signature: 武州下原住正重 ok? "Bushū Shitahara-jū Masashige" "Shitahara school" (1673-1736) What can be the value of this Wakizashi? ( I only need an approximation, it is not for sale) Thanks to all of those who can help me.

Hard to guess what value it would have. In my eyes maybe few hundred $'s. Depends on the buyer but I don't think very highly of it. I believe that unfortunately someone has cleaned that tsuba so I can't say anything of it's age. It has Akechi clan mon but as the patina is lost it's quite difficult to say anything more at my novice level. I think you read the signature correctly. However the signature appears so worn that I can't comment much about it. I'm not well versed in Shinto swords anyways. I have only few Masashige signatures in my books, and I can't draw any reasonable guesses from them. You could try www.nihontomessageboard.com for better answers. NMB is in my opinion the best online resource when it comes to Japanese swords.
