It begins. The first ritual of summer. Graduations, verdant woods and fields (VA anyway) and most of all: time for unconstrained carnage and mayhem for the next 80 hours.
Leaving work last night I got caught in a traffic slowdown on southbound I95 before Petersburg. Just half an hour of stop and go. The real stuff was on the Northbound side. Between the I85 intersection and the Appomatox bridge. Weird one. All I could see were three identical red town and country vans torn to heck and facing in different directions. Don't think there were any fatalities, but two drivers were still being treated in their seats. North bound traffic was fouled everywhere. I plan on staying near the house and doing trim painting and tree trimming.
I tell y'all to be safe, but if you get out in the public sphere it just ain't in your own hands...

That's a fine idea. I'm doing the same thing staying near the house and keeping out of trouble. Now the following weekend my son turns 18, I will venture out to see him. :)

I always avoid high traffic areas on holiday weekends. That's what God made Motorcycles and Adirondack Mountain roads for.

Just remember what memorail is, not so you can go to the lake cook out and drink. Remember all the fall soliders who made the sacifice so you can be free.

Suho, I'm not finished with it yet. You know, it amazes me how most people don't even think about the sacrifice that has and is still being made to keep us safe. Yet if a celebrity commits suicide or dies doing something stupid people make a big deal about it. We seem to have our hero worship all screwed up. To me a hero is someone who risks or even gives up their own life to save someone else, NOT someone who makes a lot of money for his or herself. This is where heros lie.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces.
Where I am from, we not only visit the graves of our families who served but also all family members who have passed away. Usually flowers are used to decorate the graves.
As is often the case with holidays in the modern times we live in, many people just see them as a down day from work or school. Some don't see the real meaning for the holidays and what they represent. Many don't care.

Is this the American weekend where everyone goes driving ? As a long weekend that is regarded as the unofficial start to summer, we unfortunately have an increase in drunk driving.
