The picture is kind of small so I can't make out any details, but at a glance, I'd say it's either French or United States. Perhaps a French P1822 Hussars, or US M1840 or M1860.
If it is a US model I'd be careful as there are tons of replicas out there!

I concur - looks like the US 1840 or 1860. Hard to tell though. There are many repros, so be careful. I would get pictures of the markings if possible

I would get pictures of the markings if possible It is the US "1860" light cavalry form but without relating markings, it could as well be a reproduction. FWIW, the m1860 is an anachronistic term. They were simply listed as the "light" in ordnance regulations. The M1840 (truly termed so) was the primary sabre at the start of the ACW. the M1860 term has been embraced by even high authority in modern collectors and authors but it still isn't truth. It will take another century to convince collectors and authority to simply relate the as the heavy or light. Might be a French 1822 officer sword but those are horn grips and usually more fancy.

I will try to get some better pics, the reason I ask is that it has come up on our local auction, hence I may put in a bid or two

Tang to blade - Blade Grip Was limited in what I could photograph, there is nothing I could see on the back of the blade.

Still looks kinda French to me - I'll get the books out in the morning if no ones figured it by then - when do u need to bid by? I'd say the hilt detail looks fairly decent on it

Well, if it's really an authentic saber, 200-300 would be a low price, but I wouldn't give more without knowing more about it.

Its not the CS repro for sure. Not sure about the grips though - doesn't look right to me for some reason

Yeeaaahhhhh.... Have to agree here. Too many things I don't like about what I can see. Lack of some sort of makers mark on an officers sword is antsy. A grip that is neither bone or shagreen. The engraving isn't crisp at all. The brass over the carrier points looks cheesy. I still would like better pics, but it really doesn't look good.
