That is way cool. I like the looks of a spike hawk more, but hammer pole ones are by far, in my opinion, more well rounded for real use.

Awesome. That is a great looking hawk. What kind of steel is used in hammers, anyway?

Can I buy it?!
Edit/add- I'm in a bad way Fallen... been watching Vikings and I am REALLY feeling an itch for some bigger axes man. Loving hammer backs and wings. I'm looking at this little baby here and it reminds me of the first 2 axes I bought from you a few years ago. If I get this one I want to do some stuff to it...

I have no idea what kind of steel hammers are made of.
Hammer polls are actually harder to forge than back spikes.
Of course you can buy it Chris, been a while since you have gotten anything from me. You will see I have came a long ways in my axe making.
You are going to see a lot more axes coming from me. Want to try several different ways to do them. Just wish I had a power hammer or a striker.

Well, once work picks up properly again I want to commission a bearded axe but I don't know when that will be. Hopefully soon

What does a decent power hammer cost?

I good new power hammer about $5,000.00, I will build a spare tire power hammer first. It will run me about $1,500.00. Then you have to buy or make all the dies you will need. They aren't cheap either.

The Axe is mine! The tear drop eye is very cool, and the whole Axe is a step above the earlier axes I have

All manufacturers are different but the steels are usually a vanadium alloy, (China excluded)

Some of the Chinese one's are ok, think Avery uses one's from Harbor Frieght. I've they hold up real well. Know I use a 32oz harbor frieght ball peen hammer in some of my forging. Going to buy a 24 and 32oz to forge in hawks. Mostly I just buy old hammer and worn out file at pawn shops.
The next hawk I will try to forge will be a wrapped eye. Use 1/4in mild steel for the body with a high carbon bit insert forge welded in.

Sounds cool. Looking forward to progress picks on that one.
The 32 oz is used to pound steel, not be turned into a hawk, right? How long does a hammer last when used for this kind of work? Does the heat from the steel affect the hammer much?

The heat doesn't affect the hammer at all, inless I do something stupid with it, it will most likely last the rest of my life. Since you are just hitting the fairly fast with the hammer it dosen't pick up much heat.
