I have done some reading about the Gallipoli campaign and its one of those tragic moments in history. So many men lost for what amounted to I believe zero gain on either side, just a lot of death. Churchill wanted to force the straights using just the Royal Navy battleships and at one point in the early going, the ships were on the verge of pushing though, but of course they did not realize just how bad of shape the Turks where behind the crumbling coastal forts and how close there were to collapse. Thinking the Turkish forts were still capable, they tragically pulled back the ships allowing time for resupply and I believe some German artillery specialists were brought in during he lull as well, which put the coastal forts back in business, eventually leading the next strategy of landing the ground troops.
