Hey guys,
I have always been drawn to this beautiful sword, however two things stop me from purchasing it. The weight is the first 5 lbs seems excessively heavy and I wonder if the weight is in the fitting not in the blade? Second is the length, I am not sure how good the temper would be along the length of the blade.
Has anyone handled this beautiful sword? I am drawn to the fittings and to the engravings on the blade.

It is a windlass piece, I like this one and the erbach but I am iffy because the length of the swords and I am worried about temper. I haven't actually bought a sword yet, been doing research and handling and cutting with friends swords so I am a little nervous about buying something that is untried and no one else has handled or used which is unfortunate because this is one of the most beautiful sub 300 swords I have seen, this and the erbach.

I've been asking Jason and Co. at AoV about this one for a while now. It gets their seal of approval, and that's good enough for me. After all, if it's not any good, AoV won't stock it.
I'll pick one up some day.

The handle does look a little like plastic to me. And 5lbs is a monster, not anything I'd use. However, there are much larger folks than me who enjoy that sort of thing. Can't deny its beauty, though.

5 lbs is really quite light when you consider most of the weight is in the fittings and that this is at least a bastard sword. There is just something simple and elegant about it, even the decoration doesn't make it overstated. I better get this one before windlass realises they are onto a winner, oh crap! I've said too much.

Well, that massive ricasso doesnt help with the weight, either. =P
Still, it's a good looking piece.

I handled one of these and it was too heavy and to thick grip for my hands, but I'm really small guy... Very nice sword anyway... You won't regret if you are big enough for it. :-) Balance isn't bad at all for the 5lb sword.

I really love the look of this sword too. Im gonna hazard a guess that it would be quite well balanced; I have the smaller German Bastard by Windlass, and I have to say that a lot of the weight of mine is in the hilt and the COB is about 2 1/4 in. from the guard. Yeah, the Novara has a longer blade, but it also has triple fullers and the side rings are quite a bit beefier than mine. The German Bastard weighs 3lbs 10 oz and i dont feel it at all...in fact its the fastest and most maneuverable sword I own, after my Godfred, which is about half the weight. So for a long sword I would expect it to handle quite nimbly.....but again, just a speculation

It does have a certain visual appeal, doesn't it?
That being said, for your first sword, perhaps a more modest hand and a half would be a better beginning. I much prefer having a sword I can control well than a bigger one. Once you've mastered that, then you can move up.

BW has some handling experience, but hasn't bought one yet.
I too however recommend a hand and half or something more wieldy. But its BWs choice. Whatever rocks his cradle.
I'd like to make BW a crazy ass sword to treasure, but if he's going to learn with something and bend it back and forth a couple of times I'd rather he start with something cheap. Problem is that in Aus there is nothing cheap (apart from Global Gear's G-series). That windlass would end up around $350 by the time he got it here from US. Even a Hanwei Albrecht would be that much.
