It includes severe lacerations and grave injuries. I saw this a couple days ago on BB.Com. Yes, the wounds are quite severe. Nobody died, but one of the robbers' hands will lack function for the rest of his life. No surgery could repair such a wound. Apparently, the Katana was "decorative". I find it hard to believe that it was only decorative, based on the wound inflicted on the suspects. I can't say I feel sorry for the suspects, for if you are willing to rob someone of their property under threat of physical harm, you must accept the possibility of being killed. I work in Physical Therapy, and I can't even fathom the rehab that will be required for the guys. One guy's face was severely injured.

I really don't see any reason a decorative sword wouldn't be able to do that kind of damage. The injuries are pretty nasty, but it's shallow cuts to unarmored meat and small bones. That's very light work with any cutting sword. It's doesn't take a "real sword" to do serious injury. Any basic mall sword with a rat's-butt tang and a sharpened edge can do that. It might break and cause additional unintended damage or it might not, but along the way it can still do some damage to the intended target.
Note to bad guys: If you do not have a weapon and you attack someone who has a weapon you are likely to have a problem.
Note to governments that like to restrict firearms: Obsolete weapons that have proven effective for millennia still work against people who don't have more modern weapons. If you can eliminate our swords, people will pick up pointed sticks. If you can somehow eliminate the pointed sticks, people will use rocks. If you eliminate the rocks, what are you going to stand on?

Smell that? That's not urine... that my friends is the sweet, unmistakable smell of justice.
Enjoy your makeover, fellas.

That's precisely the damage a blunt sword would do. Some of the old cavalry sabres were indeed blunt, the thin edge concentrates a lot of force over a narrow area and splits the skin easily, much like the pictures show. An injured soldier takes more men off the battlefield than a dead one. Some of the sabre specialists on this forum would be able to provide more historical information about this.
A live blade used properly would have severed limbs and inflicted lethal injuries.

I have family in Argentina and the home invasion crime is indeed a very serious and all too common problem. My aunt and her boyfriend were attacked by several men impersonating police officers. They bullied their way in through the front door and beat the hell out of her boyfriend, tied my aunt up and robbed them. She knew better than to open the door but all it took was a moments distraction, a simple slip up when she heard them knocking. By the time she had opened the door a crack and realized her mistake they had a foot in the door and pushed their way in.
Happens every day unfortunately.

One point for the "pro-swords-as-home-defense people" is that you're less likely to kill home invaders with a sword than with a gun. I honestly do not want blood on my hands, even robbing-thieving-criminal blood. Figuratively, of course.

I think this incident brings up a few points not explicitly noted by media coverage. If he had had a revolver with 5 rounds would the outcome of the situation be better or worse for all involved? IMHO this situation is the exact scenario where a blade would be a more practical form of home defense as it doesn't require ammunition and can fend off multiple attackers simultaneously. I think its also important to note how horrifically damaging a sword can be (even a decorative sword [I'm thinking maybe he had to classify it as a decorative object to avoid blade laws? It must have been a decent SLO to survive several swings and impacts if not!])

The good outcome is when people don't break in, and nobody gets hurt.
What does the guy's door look like? Maybe doing everything you can to secure your living space would trump either having a sword or a gun or an attack dog or a guard shark with laser beams? This isn't blaming them for not having a superfortress or anything, but there doesn't seem to be any mention of how these guys actually went about invading the home. Important details aren't the rotten dot com - level graphic images of mutilated people, but getting some info on how these guys went about getting inside in the first place might be able to help others.
This could have easily gone much worse for the homeowners.

I heard/read somewhere that the guy is getting a mandatory psych evaluation... I don't have the source for it, but will try to find and post it later. It seems to me if he had used a gun to defend himself and his wife, there wouldn't be as much (or even any) outcry from the media. Just because he used a sword, it's hot news. Disappointing and disheartening.

This could have easily gone much worse for the homeowners. While I advocate ensuring a secure home, we can't impose that kind of obligation on another person. I know you're not blaming the guy, but he should not be obliged to have to spend for and install a tight home defense system. Perhaps he could not afford it. Perhaps he lived in a neighborhood that for the most part was quite friendly and used to having open doors. Perhaps the thieves were professionals and could bypass normally secure premises? I'm a lawyer so I live in the world of obligation and liability, and in this case, the man had no obligation to ensure his premises were secured. Aside from the potential reasons above, there could be a host of other reasons necessitating a less secure home. Heck the fact that he had to use a SLO might be a clue as to the reason (could not afford a real weapon, maybe?) Just as an example, the architecture of my parents' house makes them very vulnerable to a break-in, were it not for the presence of armed guards in the vicinity. While they can afford to add security to the house, my mother refuses to install them due to aesthetic reasons. That said, if someone tried to break in and was shot by the aforesaid guards, I don't think that would be enough to convince my mother to otherwise abandon her ideas. And I couldn't blame her for that. A home must be a home.

Hey Croccifixio, from hearing you speak on other posts I had the feeling you was a lawyer. No matter how secure a house is if someone with experience wants to break in they will. I had to break into my own house a couple times after locking myself out and I'm not experienced at it. Well maybe NOW I am. What we have to do is stop making the victims into the criminals. No doubt some will see these guys as a victim of a nut with a sword.

Plenty wouldn't have reacted proactively and would have allowed themselves to become victims. If the opportunity exists and you don't take it... well that's just sad. It shouldn't be your responsibility but that's not the world we live in and no neighborhood has a cop on every corner. It's on you or nobody.
The three wounded goblins should count themselves lucky, that they didn't have their heads stricken from their shoulders. No doubt they'll be in court giving it crocodile tears in no time at all.
Times heals most wounds. Most.
