Hello, I have just brought home around 30 railroad spikes since I read that they usually are good to forge with. But how can I find out what kind of steel it really is? Also my forge is in the making, I've made the first part of the foundation so in a couple of weeks I hope to be forging! .

The following link has some info that you may find useful. www.anvilfire.com/FAQs/rr-spike.htmI am not sure about the laws in Sweden or how you obtained the spikes, but in the U.S., railroads strongly discourage tresspassing on their property. I believe you can be arrested for removing (theft) RR spikes from the property or charged with terrorism for removing spike from rail lines. Just something to keep in mind.

Thanks for that info Mark, and no worries, they are changing the old railroad that goes trough my city so in a pile I found a lot of old iron things and a lot of spikes around 200 or more so and my friend told me that they had been laying there for quite some time. So I don't think none would care. But thanks anyway !

Railroad spikes ought to be something around 1040. Not great for knives, really, since they don't harden so well as a higher carbon steel. But ok for a beginner project or for a knife you don't mind sharpening quite often.
