If you don't have someone to play with Iaido may be for you. Your opponent is imaginary like when we were kids

Mikee, only the title is in CAPS, the text in in Bold. Just watch the videos and don't look at the title and text.

ugh... you just had to show a crappy XMA vid
I hate what XMA has done to legitimate martial arts - turned them into laughable sports instead of their original intended purpose. I've studied JMA/JSA for many, many years, and appreciate the first two vids, but just can't stomach XMA. To make it even worse, Hollywood has caught the XMA bug for the past few years, having XMA type displays in many recent movies.

That's why I said, " Now watch how it's NOT done ". These idiots are a joke only I'm not laughing. This is why at a time Martial Arts Masters didn't want it to leave Japan. They probably knew this kind of S--- would happen to it.

Sorry if my post came off as being negative - not my intention... buy yeah, XMA and other "sports" like them will be the downfall of traditional martial arts (I know, I know, I'm being hyperbolic in my assemsment )

No apology necessary, you're absolutely right. Uninformed people will start thinking this cr-- is what it's all about. Next thing you know the Martial Arts is going to become Pro Wrestling. Movies don't help either, guy flying fifty feet through the air from a standing start. Again to the uninformed viewer this fake cr-- makes the real thing look like no big deal. I don't know about them but I don't want to live in a fake world.

The saddest aspect of that last XMA vid to me is that the guy is actually quite coordinated and disciplined. You can tell he's put in a lot of time, effort, and dedication. A lot of raw natural talent here, completely wasted on nonsense. With a qualified instructor and a legitimate dojo, who knows how far someone like him could have gone?

I had seen that Sugino Sensei, Katori Shinto Ryu video before and have it on flashdrive. There are some good Yagyu Shinkage Ryu demo videos, where they use a bokken held at their side drawn against an opponent, some in full samurai battle gear, out there too.

I think the XMA guy belongs in a carnival show, he's just another carny. Calling him a Martial Artist would be like calling Tiny Tim (Tiptoe Through The Tulips) an Opera Tenoror or calling Pee Wee Herman an actor. I'll bet his sword is about as sharp as a butter knife, he might just as well be using a baton. I'm sure no Iaido Master sees any talent in his act.

remember these acts happened in ancient japan as well. this is showmanship, not martial art. iaido today is easy to take the way of showmanship as well, btw.

I think everybody needs to remember that Japanese are just people like anyone else. romantic ideals in legends, stories and movies are just legends.

I watch movies strictly for entertainment and consider myself lucky if I get that out of them. In fact I usually don't like Martial Arts movies because they do make the guys look super human. Yes all people are just people but some people are raised to think in different ways and to put importance in different things. I'm sure in a basketball game we would probably clean the Japanese clock but not in Martial Arts because that's their thing. But than this is a sword forum not a basketball forum and you can go up against a 8 Dan Iaido Master to prove your point. Not me, I'll just watch him do his thing.

Not so much super human in the old B&W Japanese samurai moves like The Sword of Doom, but master swordsmen who can carve their way through a wall of human flesh holding their katana in one hand. I've never taken the time to count how many people he takes out in the end scene but he goes on a spree!

I am 3 dan iaido myself. Japanese are equal to non-Japanese in that field. 8 dan is the highest degree and most iaidoka won't get there, but in all other ranks the skill is same level.
Plus, I've seen 8 dan do mistakes, they're not perfect.
Regarding the martial arts remark- that's just plain wrong.

Go back and read my comments, no where did I say anyone was perfect. Their goal may be to reach perfection but what is perfection? I just respect someone who put that much effort into accomplishing something. Most people these days either are or think they're to busy to even try. Or it could be that they don't have the self-conferdence to even try. If you're a 3 Dan Iaido than I respect you for reaching that level. Unfortunately I live in a area where they don't offer this.
