Looks like I'll be joining a league at the start of the next season, in the meantime I'm getting gear together and will be making a regular thing of practicing. Just bought my first ball, previously I've only bowled casually and used lane balls. Picked up a Brunswick Strike King new for about half price and will have to figure out how I want my holes set up once it arrives.
Anyone else like to bowl?

I used to bowl in a kids league back in the day. Still like to go when I get the chance.

I used to bowl some back in highschool but never in anything offical. Used to be happy with anything over 150 and had a high of 213- now I have trouble getting over 100 lol! Been a long time since I did it regularly. I'll be practicing a couple times a week as soon as I have the ball and some shoes

I still average 130-140. My highest was a 232. But I don't really go to try, anymore. I go because they have a bar and my friends drive me.

Yep, the bar is something I like to have nearby when I bowl. a couple of beers seems to relax me and actually has me throwing with a little more ease so I do better after 2 pints usually.

Pints... Yeah. That's how much I drink, too.

It was something I would enjoy doing now and then with family mostly. I took a "gym class" in college that was actually just bowling twice a week, for credit. Our school had a small lane in the student union. They didn't really teach you anything, so I guess I improved a little bit out of practice. It was fun to form a "gang" mentality with your teammates as we would try to grab the "good" balls first and horde around them to "protect" them from the other team. Yeah, we were real serious about it back then. I haven't gone in a few years. I've never owned my own ball or anything like that, although I'd love to get into it again. Sounds like fun, Chrisperoni.

I bowled in leagues from 1998 to about 2008. Had a 175 average towards the end. My all-time high game was a 257. However, it began to aggravate an old shoulder injury, so I had to give it up.

I figured there would be at least a few of us here who played on the reg now or in the past. I'm finding that as with any pastime/sport, there is way more to learn about beyond just throwing strikes. So much info on ball covers, cores, numbers and measurements for hole positions, techniques etc. For me for now I just want to develop a consistent hook.
How did/do you like to throw?

...How did/do you like to throw? Fingertip grip, hook shot. I want to say I aimed for the #5 board?

I don't know enough about it to explain it the correct way. I hold my hand sideways, fingers pointing to the left. I put my middle two fingers in the holes and just barely set my thumb on the outside of that hole. I just look at the pins when I throw and do a hook. So... Yeah. However you'd explain that in fancy terms.

The best thing to do is go the pro shop at the alley. They should have a couple of balls similar to yours you can throw so they can see the oil pattern on the ball and use that plus what type of grip you want to use to help figure out where to drill the holes. I wasn't the best bowler but I averaged about 175 using a finger tip grip and a 16 lb ball reactive core ball.

I spoke to the guy who runs the local pro shop today and he's going to test my throw and check the oil pattern and drill up the ball for me when I get it. I want to switch to a fingertip grip but I haven't done that before so I will need some serious practice. I usually put a bit of hook into my throw but that's with house balls so trying a reactive ball with a light bulb core is going to fell very different I suspect.

Got my strike king yesterday and had it drilled today. Was also given a quick lesson to cover a few basics and get me using better form. Going back tonight to practice

Once you get used to a fingertip grip, you'll never want to go back to conventional.

Yeah, I liked it better than conventional grip.
The main thing I need to focus on seems to be how I set my ball in hand at the start of my approach. I have to get used to holding the ball lower and in line with my shoulder, vs. up and at the center of my chest. I liked the lesson I had today; Wayne, the pro shop guy, kept it pretty simple. He understands not to overwhelm with too much info to work on at once. Going back tomorrow to throw 2-3 sets just focusing on the 3-4 things he gave me advice on. Need to get my muscle memory reset with good habits.
