Vote...if you feel like it.
I left the poll somewhat open ended as I am curious about the Swords part....I mean this is Sword Buyers Guide but I know a lot of people have interesting and post and discuss non sword items...
Curious how many people are basically Sword people vs other weapon types.
I personally am pretty much strictly a sword enthusiast. Not really a interested in guns, or axes....used to be into knives when I was younger but not anymore.
Lets hear your thoughts.
Thanks

Well, I like pretty much all medieval or ancient weapons, but I'm here for swords. I shoot bow and arrow, I love cutting with an axe and in my reenactment company I use sword, bow, spear and axe, but I am first and foremost a sword fan. :) I also have quite a bit of knives, but that's another story completely. :D

I initially registered to get advise on the purchase of my first katana, but it's nice to find a moderated forum with kindred spirits.
My interests lie mainly in edged and striking weapons and I've been an enthusiast all my life, still owning a machete that I purchased over 40 years ago around the age of 10.
I got heavily into Japanese culture while actively training in the martial arts, and though I'm no longer currently involved, have a large collection of Japanese movies covering the samurai genre and everyday life.

For the most part, medieval swords. I do like pole-type weapons as well though, & crossbows.

I came here for the swords, through the SBG store. Now, I don't want to step on any toes but I'd been to other sword type forums and basically was made to feel less than a part of for whatever reason. I stumbled in here in 07 and Paul Southren and the "old timers" already here went out of their way to make me feel welcome and encouraged me to jump in and participate.
When I got here it was mostly swords that had my interest but I've always liked knives as well and that has grown. I've recently developed an interest in axes, damn you Ragnar! I like guns but for reasons I won't go into here I can't possess them.
So, I went with number two.

Swords, axes and spears with swords being 95% of my main interest.
Folks here were very helpful and I learned a lot. I am a member on a few other sword forums but call this place home. The core function of this forum is to assist new people in the hobby. One thing I like is the forum has grown to include mid and upper level swords including antiques.

Primarily I am here for the swords.
However I also like the axes, polearms, bows, and even a little bit of the gun stuff.
I definitely think it is good we have an other weapons section for discussion of things besides swords. Someone who likes swords might only be interested in swords but the odds they are also interested in crossbows, spears, and even trebuchets is dramatically higher than if they didn't like swords at all. Swords might just be the gateway weapon for all these others. And some folks who never looked at anything other than swords might even find they like axe or spears by visiting a thread in the other weapons section.

I originally came for the swords and this forum has helped me out alot. I agree swords are a gateway to other types of weapons. I just recently got my first long bow. Some type of axe is probably going to be my next purchase. Its not only a gateway to other weapons but with other swords too. Once i first joined I strictly was only interested in one handed medieval swords. Now I find myself wanting viking, bastards, rapiers, and huge two handed swords. I still cant get into katana's but I do see myself buying every other type of sword out there in the near future.

I still cant get into katana's but I do see myself buying every other type of sword out there in the near future. It's a long list, non-katana swords. Not even close to complete: tulwar, khanda, firangi, shamshir, Omani straight swords, kilij, yataghan, Iron Age Celtic swords, xiphos, kopis, falcata, gladius, spatha, Migration Period sword, Viking sword, one-handed knightly sword, bastard swords/warswords/longswords, big German two-handers, hangers, Hussar sabres, cutlasses, Walloon swords, smallswords, rapiers, takouba, Zande swords, shotel, African leaf-bladed swords, Steppe sabres, shashka, Khyber knife, Tibetan pointy shortswords, Tibetan rounded-tip long swords, all sorts of goloks/pedangs/podongs from Indonesia, dha/daarb, Vietnamese sabres, Philippine barongs, krisses, kampilans, and the swarms of northern Philippine blades, Korean dao, Chinese jian, two-handed jian, short jian, big two-handed dao, willow-leaf dao, oxtail dao, butterfly dao, bronze jian, khopesh, various European bronze swords. It's a nice ambition to have every other type of sword out there, but I think "near future" is over-ambitious. A nice long-term goal! This immense diversity that makes swords a subject that you can say so much about. (Though people who collect British/French/American military swords of the 19th century still have a lot to talk about, even with almost no variety in comparison.) That and the fact that this is explicitly called a "sword" forum means that most of it is about swords. While a lot can be (and has been) said about spears and other polearms, there're fewer repros, fewer print/web sources to learn from, so less to say. Archery has more out there than polearms (and perhaps more than swords); there's a lot of knife resources/forums out there. The archery forums tend to be diverse, with bowhunting, traditional archery, competitive archery all having specialised forums. Knife forums can be specialised of general. People who want to talk about those a lot will go to those forums, so we have less volume here. That we have various archery/knife talk is IMO due to the people interested in weapons in a more general way.

Came for the swords, stayed for the edged weapons. I think this is as good a description as any.
I came here because I became interested in swords, but I enjoy that we are not just limited to swords. Also, the real reason I stay is the community. Any good forum, imo, is only as good as you enjoy hanging around with the other members and especially I don't like to feel limited to only talk about swords. Recent posts talking about Spam (the meat, not the junk email) are a good example.

I started coming here for the fake caviar and Ripple at the Friday happy hours. But now I'm 64 and my recollection of such things may be a little vague or down right crazy. (ya know)

The way it's been going to piss people off. Didn't mean for it to be that way.

I've been on this forum through its various incarnations and I reckon it must be about 7 or 8 years though my memory is pretty bad so I might be wrong. I came for the swords but after buying a few and moving around quite a bit I realised swords are a pain in the arse to move. So I switched over to collecting knives. I've been extremely picky and as it stands only 4 blades are in my collection still of many that I have owned. I've met some great people on this forum and I will stick around until someone kicks me out :D
Enough of that, back to your regularly scheduled shinies.
