Here's finally the new pommel for my Albion SL 13th C Knightly! (The picture was taken during the partial solar eclipse, Epic. ) It's designed by me, made by my father and finished by me. It's made of some sort of tool steel. It added the weight noticeably and changed POB closer to guard. I'm not yet sure if it's a good thing... Yet now it's a really fast bastard sword! Thank you!

Looks cool. How is it attached? That does look good...much longer "grip" now. Did you extend the tang or is there a deep channel in that long pommel to reach to "old" tang?

Heh, I weighed it... It's 300g heavier, 1480g now! Wow, no wonder it feels agile, POB is around 5cm/2inch from guard. Hmph, I guess I have to remove more steel. I removed probably 100g already with a dremel. There is a hole inside the pommel that fits the original tang perfectly. Pommel is welded from three pieces. It's hammered in place. I was thinking I'd drill a hole through the tang and pommel from side and then rivet it. I was thinking also epoxy or some other glue but I think not. Right now it's just hammered in place and it feels solid. I'm not sure can I even get it off without destroying the handle wood. I think it will stay in place like this. Any ideas, comments and advise are most welcome!

That's the way I'm adding a cross and pommel to a sword right now on a project

Good idea, like it. I'd do the rivet through pommel and tang. Better safe than sorry. Epoxy doesn't hurt either but you probably won't be able to get any in there now. Drilling and riveting should be possible the way it is though.

I think 1480g is the overall weight of the sword... no way that pommel weighs that much.

Depleted Uranium is great material for pommel because it gives you super powers! Heh, yeah, I was a little bit unclear. It's the weight of the sword of course. I didn't weigh the pommel separately, but I guess it's around half a kilo. What do you think about the weight of the sword(1480g) and POB(5cm)? The sword is really easy to maneuver now, but it feels strange because the blade feels so light. It was my fathers idea to construct the pommel of three pieces. (Maybe I should tell him to quit his job and start producing sword parts with me professionally. )

I don't think you'll like my answer but to be honest, I think it does the sword a disservice to have such a heavy pommel. Yes, the sword feels very light and agile but it is VERY easy to displace in a bind and while it might still cut light targets decently, it won't perform well at all as soon as some momentum is required. Not only when cutting heavier targets but more importantly also when coming in contact with other swords, be it a cut, Versetzen or a block. With the forward pivot point having moved actually far beyond the tip, the sword most likely is very hard to move precisely and intuitively because of the lack of feedback regarding the positioning on the blade during movements.
In short, I think the sword lost much of its original performance.

I understand completely what you are saying. I think I'm going to remove more metal. I guess about 100g more would be enough. I might get POB somewhere near 8-9 cm from guard. When I designed and ordered it I didn't know it would be that heavy! But no worries I already have an idea where I'll remove the material. It's gonna fit the design quite well I believe.

At the original weight, you could have welded flanges to it, that way you could have used it as a mace while its in the scabbard! ;) I was thinking you could have drilled the centre piece only before it was welded up so it still looked solid on the outside but reduced the overall weight.

Thanks chenessfan. It weights now 1328g and POB is around 8cm from guard. I could easily reduce the weight even more but It feels pretty comfortable, so I'll leave it like this for now. I'll see how it works when I practice and cut with it. Yeah, Blackthorn. It would have been an amazing mace, with the original weight. If I had known this pommel would turn out that heavy, I would have ordered it hollow. But I'm actually happy I didn't, because it looks pretty cool now!
