auctionet.com/en/2193163-sabel-swedish-m-1859-for-officer-blade-with-etched-and-gilded-decorMother of God I expect this one to go for quite a pretty penny but wow *whistles* if I can get mine anything close to this it will be a centerpiece of my collection. Auctionet has a few of these on sale right now for anyone who MUST have one (only thing to note is they have attached shipping options but only w/in the EU so make sure you have a friend or address there first), I had to delete my account for my own good really. If someone wants to get me a job that pays double my current salary I would be happy to re-activate it, but so long as I get paid peanuts for my job I am forced to quit while I am so far ahead I would go so far as to say that by the end of the year I will have probably the largest collection of military sabres of anyone I know in real life. (excluding the likes of Pino and Mr Dave Kelly and their dragon hoards of swords)

WOw...am I crazy or is the blade pattern welded as well? It sure is! Just like ours! Albeit at least much more visible. We will have to see what time has in store for mine. I was and am still of the opinion good etching >>> bluing or gilding but the way the gilding is sheer so you can see the damascus underneath is borderline erotic, good lord. But this is helping me visualize what will need to be done to mine since I plan a full refurbishment, it deserves that much. The entire blade would have to be cleaned and polished, then re-etched, then a goldwash, and then polishing the pattern out of the raised parts. At least that is my understanding of how it was accomplished here and if mine can look like this, I will be very happy. Plus I have all the blade etchings and not just the words for contrast!

Do not want to p!ss on the party, but I have this idea the blade was nickel plated and quite thick too. Look at the image above. The first red rusty part. I think I see the top layer peeling off. All in all the blade gives me the feeling the ,,Damast'' pattern was stamped (it looks very coarse and much too deep) and plated. Compared to the patterns I posted above, this one does not fit. For me, there's something off. Could be wrong of course. It is interesting to me in the sense of ,,how the hell did they do this?''. As an aside, this one is the only one , for me, worth bidding on: auctionet.com/en/2169042-varja-southern-european-17th-centuryBut there is a reserve and later on 22.5% premium + shipping, so winning this excellent little Toledo ring hilt rapier is gonna be a big ,,ouch'' in the financial department. The estimate of 1435 euro is too close to retail too for my taste. Just rambling. Need more morning coffee.

For me, there's something off. Could be wrong of course. It is interesting to me in the sense of ,,how the hell did they do this?''. Ah you may be right then. I didn't see the words indicating it on the blade which was a bit odd but not too odd given our sample size is...inadequate to say the least. But there is another one for sale, from the same auction no less, that also purports a damask blade but no verbal indication (https://auctionet.com/en/2196587-sabel-swedish-later-part-of-the-19th-century-brass-bracket-with-openwork-decoration-blade-with-etched-and-partially-gilded-decoration-the-back-of-the-blade-marked-eisenhauer-damast-steel). Now, it is possible this could be written on the spine as the one linked above purports. But given that there are no photos of the spines for either, and such a detail seems like it would be included since they pointed it out, it does make me a tad bit suspicious. Still, if this is a fake damask pattern, it is quite a nice one with a good level of work put into it. A shame then.

I would also very much like a nice collection of Rapiers but I think I need to wait for my Arms and Armor one I ordered...well...damn near 4.5 years ago now. I fully understand it changed from a stock-but-left-hand model to a full custom, but that was paid off at the end of 2019, and I also get COVID was a monster of logistics. But I mean I called in September 2021 and they said they'd at least get it started before 2022. 2022 rolls around and I get an email saying I was high on their priority list. I of course reply to take their time and not rush things, as working under pressure tends to produce less beautiful results. But nothing in the almost 4 months since then now. Beginning to believe I will never see the fruits of my $3,500.00 I spent college and my first job helping to finance =/

Near 4.5 years on the order list? That sucks. Even with the flu this comes over as rather ridiculous. I like my A&A custom Dresden set a lot qua workmanship, qua handling not so much and I do not want to speak bad about A&A, as the Dresden was discontinued when I ordered the set and they told me they had to refurbish the molds for the hilt parts, which they did no questions nor extra $$ asked as far as I can tell, but maybe it is time for a refund? Dresden Saga :: sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/47402/dresden-rapier-main-gauche-revisitedIt's fun to read those old posts and comments once again.

Dresden Saga :: sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/47402/dresden-rapier-main-gauche-revisitedIt's fun to read those old posts and comments once again. Yeah, my first "real" sword was a St Maurice by them and in 2020 I finally got the German Branch sword I'd lusted after in college and still love. I've been told it is supply issue and that there's only 1 person to do the guard, which is really what I need A&A to do more than anything (and maybe I should find my own source of steel, especially so I could have a 12mm thickness at the ricasso). But I don't wanna be "that guy" if there is something going on. It's just the communication hasn't been great if I can be honest. When done, it should look gorgeous though. Imagine their stibbert museum rapier but with slightly thickened bars. And the decoration (and pommel) is instead done with the acanthus floral designs like the German rapier. Gold plated guard and pommel, hopefully that thick flowing kind of gilding, with silver wire grip. I really want it to look super fancy and long, almost like some sort of lance where there are flourishes of golden erupting from my hand at the "center" of the guard with the pommel and plate and quillions all shooting out and then that polished steel blade shooting forward.

I have once again returned from the depths of the internet. I now have proof that the spine inscription CAN indicate damascus steel. Link here for verification: www.lauritz.com/sv/auktion/svensk-sabel-m-1859-med-dolmann-og-balg-3/i4442117/While this doesn't mitigate either of the other auction sabres as without photos there is no proof, it is at least one further piece of information for us. I really should compile what I know/can find on Swiss and Swedish swords using forums, foreign wikipedias, and books, just to have general English guides somewhere one of these days, preserving and sharing knowledge and whatnot. I think I must have been some Irish monk many lives ago.
