I think I've mentioned this a LONG time ago, but the project stalled and kind of got put on the back burner for over 2 years. It's not going back on the hot one because it can't really stay where I'm keeping it right now. Anyway, I'm rebuilding an old Mustang II. And by rebuilding, I mean from the ground up. The car is stripped of EVERYTHING. Panels, doors, seats, lights, every bit of wiring... You name it. It's gone.
When I'm done with it, this thing is going to be the V8 Destroyer. The car originally had a N/A carbureted 2.3 4cyl motor. Any mechanic worth his wrench knows this engine. It's going to be rebuilt almost entirely with Esslinger performance parts (aside from a thing or two, here and there) with a draw-through turbo set-up using a Garrett T3 turbo out of an 85 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe. The engine is going to run N/A with a manual selective boost switch of my own design. If you know turbos, you know they are controlled with a wastegate. I've devised a way to manually open the wastegate all the way, effectively turning it back into a N/A motor than can have the turbo activated at any time. Adding in a Snow Performance water/methanol injection kit should give me plenty of room to play with boost pressure with an electronic boost controller that I can tune and have different settings for different grades of fuel. With all of the modifications I'm doing, I'm guessing 200+ hp with a redline around 7K.
So... Anyone else like to build cars?

Long ways from a V8 destroyer with only 200+ HP, not even close to modern turbo 4cyl. Just start out of my way while I'm in my BMW 540i sports wagon, BMW 540i sports sedan, 67 Chevy Chevelle 450HP V8, 2dr or the wife's 67 Chevy Chevelle 300HP V8 4dr.

It doesn't sound that potent, but with the MII body, and weight reduction, the hp/torque to weight ratio is crazy. It'll be a lot faster than it sounds.

Sorry 200hp with a turbo doesn't impress me. 10 years ago had a 1970 Datsun 510 GT3 car we auto crossed no turbo putting out 225hp with a 2400cc 4cyl. it was stripped of everything.
Building a 1976 Datsun 260z with a 406 V8 it will put out around 600hp it will be stripped.

I'm a motorhead but my motors only come with two wheels. All I'll ever need.

Gunnar, you're into Vikings and motorcycles... Are you a Zakk Wylde fan by any chance?

I grew up around cars at my grandfather's auto shop. I've had a few nice cars, including a '78 Datsun 280Z (straight 6), an '88 Camaro 305 stick shift, and a '51 Ford Deluxe 2dr coupe with a rebuilt V8 w/2 single barrel carbs I did myself. The Ford's the only one I still have, been sitting in my garage for over 15 years. Don't know when I'll get around to actually finishing it.

Suho, I've never really been into music. I'll listen to it while I'm doing something else but not just to sit and listen to it. I can't sit still long enough for that. I'll have to check him out though.

The Turbocoupe motors will put out almost that entirely stock. Fuel injection is a little over my head, at this point, but I can always swap to it when I have a better understanding of the wiring set up and the programming. I'll have to find a place with a dyno when I get it built to see exactly what the power gains will be, as I don't really have an estimate other than the other builds I've seen that were similar were all near or over 200hp. Plus, this will be a daily driver, so I don't want to get too crazy with fuel usage. With all the mods and the T5, I think I can get away with 200 hp and still run low-mid 30s in mpg.

Oh, and my great uncle had one of those old Chevelles. I think it was the same year as yours. Nice looking cars. Very classy. Much more so than my little MII. Lol.

Suho, I've never really been into music. I'll listen to it while I'm doing something else but not just to sit and listen to it. I can't sit still long enough for that. I'll have to check him out though. He is one of Ozzy Ozbourne's guitarists. I think Ozzy got him back around '89, when he was maybe 18 or 19. He was just a kid then but now he sports a full on Viking beard and has for years. I don't think he plays with Ozzy anymore but he has a bunch of albums with his band Black Label Society. I am not a super-fan, but have a few albums. It's ok. I was just curious because he is big into choppers and I think bikers represent a sizable chunk of his fans.
My mom bought a '74 Mustang new, I guess just before she married my dad. 7-8 years and four kids later, When they bought their first house it pretty much went into the garage and sat there for the next few decades. She finally sold it to some kid and his dad for about $500, which they were going to rebuild as a project. Until then I had kind of entertained the notion that I might do the same thing, but of course I know nothing about the subject so it wasn't likely going to happen anyway.

Those things are tanks, man. On the bright side, you won't have a lot of electronics to tune or wires to splice.

With all the mods and the T5, I think I can get away with 200 hp and still run low-mid 30s in mpg. I love cars but am not a motorhead. Even so, I can get behind this statement. When I was a kid(and not paying for stuff myself, hahaha) if you'd asked me I'd say power, power, power. Now, if I could custom create my ideal car it'd be a mid- to late-60's Mustang fastback and a modern engine. The 2011 and beyond Mustang V6's get 300+ horse power and 30+mph, and some Chevy and Dodge get better power at a similar mph That'd be heavenly.

The 2015 2.3 "ecoboost" gets 32 mpg with 310 hp. I'd bet you could get more with a boost controller of some sort.
