Hello all, I just joined the forum today! I'm looking into a new cutter and have my eye on the Munetoshi "Kouken" shobu zukuri katana, has anyone been able to use this sword yet? I really like te shobu style, and this is probably one of the only ones in my price range ($300) I would be cutting pool noodles, paper, tatami, and maybe some 2in bamboo when my cutting gets better. Any suggestions or thoughts would be welcome!

Welcome to SBG! I have a couple Munetoshi katana and like them. Not the model linked, though. They are a good value sword, but not the best. For a heavy-duty cutter in shobu zukuri maybe the Hanwei Raptor would serve you better. They are backordered in most places, though a member here, LG Martial Arts, had some that he was selling at a great price some time ago. Perhaps you could contact him and see if he still has one. If not and you don't mind waiting, the site Kult of Athena sells them for a good price and has an outstanding reputation. sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/40985/hanwei-raptors-shobu-shinogi-zukurikultofathena.com/product.asp?item=SH2417Sword vendor Cheness also makes a couple different shobu models. It's a bit tricky, though. When they get you a good sword, it's very tough. The issue is that quality control with them can be spotty, and they have a return/replacement policy that is not very buyer-friendly, so if you get a poor one you will likely be stuck with it. www.chenessinc.com/shobu_zukuri.htmLastly, there are some forges that may be able to make you one for a good price. It's Chinese New Year, so there would be a wait. At the moment hauweisword is the go to for their above average quality and aesthetics. There is also swordmaker688(aka Hanbon) and st-nihonto. Off of ebay is Sinosword(aka JKoo Forge) and Zhiforge(aka buyiaito). All of these enjoy a decent reputation for making a decent product. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah I have seen the Cheness models in Shobu and have heard... "iffy" things about their customer service. I did like the Raptor series as well but as you said, they are indeed hard to find in stock! I'll check the vendors you posted for sure! Thanks again!

Adrian, thanks for linking me in the above post. Chaser45, I don't have any Raptors at the moment. Like stated above, most places have them backordered, and the new ones won't arrive until the next batch comes in from China. BPogue (another member here) is an authorized CAS Iberia rep... he might have a timetable for when the next batch should arrive.

If you buy Cheness it's wisest to go through a secondary vendor such as KOA and ask for a quality check before shipping, if your wishing to cut with a Cheness you will need to address that, while they come with correct profile the relative sharpness is below par.
