Does anyone know of a good smallsword or British 1796 spadroon replica for less than about $400? I'm on a bit of a search for one, as it's on my list after the Empire Costume Dragoon pallasch (which has come with quite a recommendation). Cold Steel offers one, but the reviews I've read seem to indicate that it suffers from what I shall delicately term "Cold Steel Syndrome".

... and not much over a $400 budget. Go up a little more and there's the Arms & Armor smallsword.
For a 1796, is there anything in that price range other than Universal Swords?

I ordered the G. G. Godwin colichemarde smallsword. 1 on 1 replica of the antiques. On the Cold Steel the re enforced part of the blade is much too long. I will review it when it gets here.

That stuff from Jacob's armoury looks nice. May have to get me some. The US Staff and field officer sword looks very much like a small-sword, but comes with the added bonus of having an authentic military connection. They are quite common on e-bay, and usually go for under $400 depending on the seller and condition. Here is one with 12h left and still under $100. Quite a lot of bids, but most of them are from the same person bidding 10+ times in a row, probably to scare off other people. The 1860 was actually the first sword I purchased. I quite liked it. Its nice and light, though some may view it as being *too* small, especially compared to a spadroon www.ebay.ca/itm/201272998319?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649If you are brave, you can also look into the 1840 NCO sword. I posted a bit about it here (https://sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/43130/musician-sword-bonus-review-replica). It is basically an American spadroon, and serves its purpose well. Real ones can be got for around the $400 mark on e-bay. They are generally very solid pieces - solid brass construction with a heavy, no-nonsense thrusting blade - very much the opposite of the 1860 officer sword. I moan about the bland-ness of the Windlass repro, but really its not that bad, and for less than $100 from KoA, its not a bad buy. I *may* know someone who has an 1860 which they are looking to get rid of. If you are interested, I can go ask them. The grips are a bit worn and the knucklebrow is a *bit* loose from what I remember, but as a result it would probably go for cheap - last I asked it would be around $100 plus shipping from the Can.

KoA has some done by Universal. I have been looking at buying one and doing a review (with compairisons to the 1840 NCO) sometime next month though if you want to wait a bit.

Were you talking about their 5-ball spadroon or the 1796? Either way, would be curious to hear about it There is an 1840 NCO in relatively good condition for $270 OBO on e-bay. It been up there for at least a month, maybe more, so the seller may be eager to part with it if you fire off an offer. It does not come with a scabbard, but you can pick up a replica scabbard from Dixie Gun Works for around $40.

The 1796. I'll check out the 1840, though right now 270's probably out of my price range for a single sword (otherwise I'd be doing the thing already!)

fair enough. The 1840's are not uncommon, so you are bound to find one sooner or later if you look hard enough. Personally, I feel that the $200 price tag on the Universal Swords stuff is a bit much, but thats just me
