Adding "raw" rayskin to a tsuka does, in fact, make it stronger. I think it has something to do with the rayskin shrinking as it dries (you soak it in water to make it pliable, first) and the compression pulls against the wood. Also making it more difficult for the tsuka to split along the glued together seams. Back then, from what I understand, they pretty much just used rice paste as glue, so it was a lot less strong (IMO) than modern glues.

I remember reading that review a long time ago and having a good laugh over my cup of tea.
The sword had a "reverse hazuya polish" which I don't mind but it seems at the $1000 price point it should be better.
The sword couldn't cut paper but all these posters including that annoying mod with the ugly mugshot who had a spat with another katana vendor in some other time period being especially a prick to the thread author who spent good money on a sword that failed expectations.
It was hilarious how all these other people defended that disappointing sword, cracked me up.
PROJECT X KATANA! Guess his Xpectations weren't met.

Hmmmm, after reading through the review (which wasn't informative at all) and all the fan boy attacks to the op (Marc's were especially hilarious) we're still kinda stuck on not knowing just how worthy these swords are. It sounds like the reviewer believed spending $1000 would get him a perfect sword when in reality it's still just a production sword. This is why the hype marketing is an issue to me, Paul making statements like this, "SBG and Longquan's top sword forge - all working together to create the absolute best quality Katana ever made outside of Japan." are what get inexperienced guys like the reviewer in trouble. Because they believe it and believe the money spent makes the statement true. Then when they get the item they're completely enraged by standard production flaws. In all honesty it's not his fault, he just believes he's getting what he was pitched. Then he gets a lemon and its now his fault rather than the Lonquan forge. As the consistent attacks and belittling showed, especially from Mr. Ronin himself Marc... Of course there is the possibility that this guy was slinging mud but if he really spent $1000 to mud Ronin, then he's got a lot of issues and even more money. Seems to me that Project X unfortunately has the same hit or miss issues like the rest of the Ronin line or production swords for that matter. For example another Project X blade review here the Crom Killer which had some heavy fit and finish issues.

So for the extra price goes on throw away junk like a sword stand and box that eBay sellers give you for free anyway. Umm okay...isnt that exactly what we DON'T want when paying for a katana?
They should ditch that 'reverse polish' at least and do something that looks genuine. If you showed any Japanese katana polisher this they would kick your butt. I asked a few longquan sellers why don't they do it properly? Simple answer was they don't want to cut themselves using hazuya on the hamon -__-

So in reality you're paying more but getting less (regarding the Elite fittings) but they're a production run so you're paying more for them to be mass produced with standard pro fittings?? What's the point then? You might as well buy an elite and get something unique. It's also funny that he described the swords the same as the hammer forged line Ronin released to. So what really is the difference between the Elites, Hammer forged and Project X aside from a full wrap? If the lamentation and polish are basically the same, what's the extra cash for the full wrap?

Not to veer off-topic, but Josh, your comment about your early posting prompted me to see how far back the records here go. Under the "recent posts" link in each member's profile, for instance, it seems to go up to 67 pages, at 15 posts per. I'm sticking with this number because you and I both only have 67 pages of "recent" posts. That's 1,005 posts, by the way. Your oldest post is on page 67, dated August 13, 2010, in this thread: sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/post/264663/thread (I wish the pictures were still available ) Mine is dated...August 1, 2014. In this thread: sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/post/575941/threadSo in four and a half years, Josh, you posted as much as I have in five months. HOW DOES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL??? (It makes me feel like I should get out more...) Anyway, still getting the "meh" vibe off this new sword. Just doesn't grab me, but for those who like it and are satisfied, good for them.

Random, you should almost definitely get out more, swing by NC and we'll have a stout or 12. Although you have certainly made more posts than me (or me + every other member here combined), I believe those are the stats for only one of my personas. I kind of have an evil twin, or alternate reality doppleganger, thing going on here. There is another me here with almost 5K posts made but he's shy and doesn't come out anymore. One of the strange side effects of the "Transition" (think Chiller voice-over) -Josh

Oooh, Highland's good stuff. Just had their porter in my last random batch.
Wait, what were we talking about again?
Oh, right...swords. This one's a big "meh" for me. I've seen nicer, I've been more excited for less.
(Which Dom? I think there have been two or three. I met one of them at an Otakon many, many years ago...)

I do have to say that the post I referenced earlier is several years old... since Chris doesn't post on SBG anymore, I don't know what the difference (if any) would be with the new Project X and the Ronin Elite in this run.

...when I first started searching for affordable katana and it's how I found the sbg forum(I read the sbg store reviews and thought the Cheness Kaze was the ultimate best sword ever)... -Josh Well, now you are much more experienced and wiser and know better. We all know the Cheness Tenchi is actually the ultimate best sword ever lol! ;)

In my (humble and limited) experience, the reverse hazuya polish is probably due to excessive pressure of the thumb on the fingerstone. Which will dulls/whitens the non-haman parts, does tend to shine up (which appears darker) the harder hamon steel. In my mono T10 blade, for instance, using light pressure, the hamon ended up white-ish and the non-hamon steel ended up darker. (even darker also possible via nugui)

They are exactly the same blades as the ronin elites right just different fittings? I'm sure I was told that when the last batch was selling. The ronin elite bare blades sell for $575, I'm not sure what it would cost to have one coustom mounted though? That's what Chris from Ronin said about the 1st batch of Project X katanas, Ronin Elites with added bells and whistles. I don't know about the new batch though.

I didn't think the store existed anymore. Back when I was a member on the old forum they had it right there where you could easily access it but I don't see it here anywhere.

You'll have to go to the store and hit the "SBG Exclusives" tab to see the "Project X" sub tab. I know the pre orders are closed now.
