I was checking out ThereonArms when I noticed that the old Hanwei dao has what looks like rayskin underneath the wrap. Is this new or were they always wrapped in rayskin? Also is it real or simulated? Does anyone have one?

I've got one sitting in my closet that I picked up about two-to-three years ago.
It has the same grip underneath the wrap. I believe they were always like this.
I'll be honest and say I'm not sure how to tell if its real vs. fake ray skin and I'm not sure how to disassemble it (or sure I could reassemble it) to get a better look.
It looks similar to the grip I have that I know is real Ray skin, but it looks too Perfect. Can't tell if its because it is fake, or because it is more protected under the overwrap vs. just handling a grip directly.

How does it handle?

How does it handle? I don't do test cutting, so I can't answer that question (Living in a small apartment, I'm happy enough when I can lug patio blocks to a workout at the head of our system and work on breaking ). I would love to try and work on test cuttings, so any suggestions in that direction would be appreciated. As for handling, I remember liking it. I was looking for a step up from the SLO I first got to train with. I tried Hanwei's Practical Dao first. It was very tip heavy and I didn't like the utilitarian aesthetic. Then I tried the Oxtail Dao and enjoyed it until I traded up to Hanwei's Song Sword (Dao), which I still use and love. (note: the Song has a completely different Geometry and PoB, but the Oxtail Dao was and is very nice) In class I don't always get to use my Dao of choice. I bring the SLO with me depending on how tight the space is and what I am working on. There is a different level of awareness doing forms with a live weapon, and sometimes its easier to work on other aspects if you're not making sure some idiot doesn't moving into your space.

KoA reports the rayskin is imitation. I can't tell genuine from imitation. I can tell you that, having removed the pommel on mine, the rayskin is decorative only - it's not a wrap under the cord. To my untrained hand, it doesn't matter. The poly cord weave has a bit of a slippery feel, but offers a very secure grip when cutting. And this dao cuts thru light and medium targets like a light saber. I haven't cut bamboo or the like - to me that would be a bit out of any oxtail's league (I offer no expertise on that point; it's just what I have read).

I’ve had mine a short 10 years, 8? I don’t know if the rayskin was real than or not, now it isn’t. It cuts and handles like a dream. I had to remove the red flag shortly after receiving it because just by doing the drills I cut it to shreds.
