I was honored to work with our resident KB expert Jason Blakey on another Kill Bill replica sword he's doing. He creates the most screen accurate versions of these swords found anywhere... period, so when he asked if I would do the tsukamaki on his next one, I was thrilled at the chance to be a part of such sword movie coolness.
There was still some detailing and color work Jason needed to finish, such as the gold accents on the fuchi and touching up the coloring on the kashira, so keep that in mind when looking at the pics. Other than that, the fittings he's seached far and wide for are pretty much exact copies of the film prop. He also needed the length and alternating pattern of the tsukamaki to be precise as well as the placement of the menuki. There was some confusion on my part and my first attempt yielded one too many hishi but thankfully, Jason saw it right away and I then proceeded to fix the error (right after banging my head on my desk for my stupidity).
For this project I shaped the core profile to fit the fuchi and kashira properly, thinned it out, carved deeper channels to accommodate the samegawa panels, cut and applied the same panels, polished the surface and especially the emperor's node, wrapped the tsuka in black leather ito from Nihonzashi. I originally picked up some of Fred Lohman's leather ito but found it quite impossible to work with so upgraded to this ito.
Jason was awesome to work with and I'd be more than happy to collaborate again in the future.
Here ya go, just get the "Battle Without Honor Or Humanity" soundtrack playing in your head while viewing, lol

Thanks for looking
