Among my many hobbies, I like to build and overclock computers. I've got one build (that I'd like to sell, actually) that has an Intel Core2 Duo running at 2.55GHz. And the only reason it's only running that is cooling issues. It's super stable where it is, but I'm thinking about going liquid cooled with it. I've got everything except a radiator. I had it pumping water from a bowl full of ice and water to the processor water block. It looked really jank, but man could it keep the temperature down. I've also got my brother's computer (some old AMD chip that ran 1.9GHz stock) running at 2.9/3GHz. There's just something fun about taking old parts, putting maybe $100 in them, and getting a computer that can more or less keep up with PCs off the shelf that are a lot more expensive.

I've never felt the need to overclock my own PCs but I used to do it all the time for customers that would request it. Only do it on rare occasion now for friends and family since I started working in an Enterprise IT environment. Building and playing with PC parts is fun but really expensive (too expensive for me) if you wanna chase benchmarks... These days I tend to focus on efficiency/affordability and quiet operation in my builds. (I too am looking for a home for my last CPU/RAM/mobo/GPU)

I use a headset, so noise generally isn't an issue. And I just like to see what I can do with old hardware. That way, if I melt it down trying to push it too far, I'm really only out however much the motherboard costs. And with ASRock putting out some fair motherboards for older chips at pretty good prices, it's really not an issue. I think the last couple I picked up from them was $50-$70. I can reuse the RAM and I've got, like, 3 AMD Athlon64 X2s just sitting around my apartment.

I wouldn't call it a "small" gain, but I know what you're getting at.
