Since I absolutely suck at inkscape I talked MOK into drawing out a sword design I would like to have made someday. The would have an app 32" lenticular blade Grip length of 7 1/2"-8" between the crossguard and pommel About 42" overall. POB should be app 5"-6" down from the tang shoulder and ideally the COP should be near the tip of the sword.

MOK deserves the credit as the artist. I've had that design rolling around in my head a long time and he was able to give it life.

Eh, it's mostly a matter of practice. I've just had more of it.

Heh. As it happens, I am a graphic designer. (And in my professional opinion that avatar ain't half bad for such a manifold mystical mash-up!)

There's a difference between mashing up pre-existing images and drawing out your own work.

Ok, Luka had made a comment on MOK's 1.0 design of this that got me thinking: He had stated he would buy this if it had Sarmatian fittings. Not knowing much about the Sarmatian people I looked them up. So we have a Western Asian culture flourishing in about the 2nd century AD contemporary with the Roman empire, the establishment of the Northern silk road trade route, and the Han dynasty in china. The Sarmatian swords feature prominent ring pommels, flat, billet like hilts, and somewhat larger blades than the Roman gladii and spatha. While the Romans were still using their famous weaponry - the Chinese were making hand and half sized swords (1.12 meters or app 44") with grip lengths that would not be found in Europe until the advent of the longsword. Since the Sarmatian swords could almost be looked at as a transitional type between the Chinese swords of the time and the Roman, this kind of goes along with my plausible alt-history hypothesis of the Jian and it's associated metal working technology making it across the silk road and becoming the anscestor of the longsword.

Interesting, looks like a yang tai chi sabre hilt with a jian blade, assuming to be used with jian technique?

Jian and longsword due to the elongated handle.

And according to tale the Yang saber is a rehilted British saber that Yang Lu Chan was given after besting a British saber fencing champion using only a pipe stem/feather duster depending on which version of the story you encounter.

That makes sense, longer handle similar to a two handed battle jian which is in effect a Chinese longsword. I too have read that the yang sabre was influenced by western sword design.

If we look back to the Han dynasty both Jian and Dao were hand and a half / two handed weapons meant to defend against the Gi and long spear so the design is not without precedent but does represent a modern take of a Jian with a two handed Dao hilt.

Plus, I'm a sucker for a nice ring pommel.

I love the Spattered tint on the blade! Adds a bit of flavor to it. But seriously? That pommel really needs to be filled in with metal. What's it there for if it doesn't have any weight? But, other than that, I love it! Very smart, logical, and strong design.
