I am looking for a recommendation on one to buy, I'm looking at the DSA and the del tin ones. I also have some questions though, like should dussack be shorter than a cutlass? And if the guard is so complex why is it's use so radically different from a saber/cutlass?

Not all dussacken had complex hilts many were hiltless and knife like. Also wooden and leather dussacken were used as weapons by the fencing guilds in and of themselves not just as trainers for metal ones.
