Every year I suffer the same problem I hop around on one foot, carry a walking stick and curse the folleys of the festive season, mainly too many prawns and sea food and too much beer. The dreaded gout strikes my right foot and for weeks its damn self inflicted pain, too stubborn to go to the doctor and do something about it.

"Uric acid is a breakdown product of purines that are part of many foods we eat. An abnormality in handling uric acid and crystallization of these compounds in joints can cause attacks of painful arthritis, kidney stones, and blockage of the kidney filtering tubules with uric acid crystals, leading to kidney failure. "
Use cold. If the pain isn't too bad, try cold packs or cold compresses on the joint to lessen the inflammation and help the pain. Ice the joint for 10 to 20 minutes several times a day.
Non-inflammatory pain killers help - naproxen (Aleve), ibuprofen and my favourite Mefenamic acid (Ponstan)

My wife had an attack of gout once, but only once. She's in a wheelchair now but for other reasons. Anyway, she handles pain quite well yet she reported the gout was "pretty damned bad" so I know you must be in some pain. You have my sympathies.

No sympathies needed , as I said purely self inflicted. But thanks anyway. Aussie you sound like your speaking from experience mate. No water, don't you know what fish do in it?

Ahh yes, was a while ago AND for the same reason, BTW tomatoes are a no-no for a while, for water we have a filter (our water is not bad generally) this even filters chlorine and fluoride (added by the government), alcohol is out so no beer, wine or spirits ! All of which take time, like 3 to 6 months

Don't screw around with gout. The damage is permanent. Only had 4 attacks in ten years. First two I john wayned and the joint damage still bothers me. First indications of a gout attack you've got maybe 8 hours to take direct action to stop the flame out. Colcrys is a standard med and my doc threw in some super stuff something like irdomithicin(sic). Shut the attack down in a couple of days with minimum pain and discomfort: even went to work.
Older and wiser. See a doc.
