Hey guys,
I was watching king arthur (yes I like the movie, sue me) and I noticed that tristram's sword was rather interesting. It looked like a long bladed song sword with a two handed grip. At first I thought it was a two handed broadsword but it didn't move like it was blade heavy at all. I know alot about chinese swords but have never encountered anything like this. Except for the two handed jian and the two handed broadsword but neither of them had the same mechanics as this blade. Are there two handed versions of hanwei's song sword historically or is this a fantasy piece? Either way it is really cool and I want one.

I don't think it was a bagua dao stevenn, simply because of the way that tristram handles it, the bagua dao is a very hefty cutting sword, the sword tristram was using danced like a jian which is very unusual. sI4k: I didn't find it B grade at all, I found it more believable (except for a few glaring errors) than the knights riding around in plate armour stuff and I just love how they've blended it all together and still made it feel epic, oh and I love some of the weapons. Bors blades and tristrams blade and tristrams bow, these three weapons are what I'd like to own, need to get some money together and harass brenno methinks. Here is a picture of what the handle looks like; So it looks like a two handed dao but I haven't seen such a light moving blade. Maybe it is just a two handed dao and it is the swordsmanship he was taught that makes it look incorrect.

I just find the whole Arthur + Romans thing totally b :E. But yeah the movie is epic, but then one of my favorite movies is waterworld to ;D. I think it looks like a one handed dao or 1 1/2, it looks to small to be two handed. Oh and the armor on the guy to the left is just the worst armor I've seen, it's like he wants to be cut. Those spikes will just guide the attackers sword between the spikes .

It isn't a one handed dao mate, it is too long and I don't know that they have such a thing as a hand and a half dao. It most definitely isn't a bagua it is far too short to be a one hander and the blade is too thin, width wise, to be a two handed dao. It is like a katana with a dao handle and a dao blade but the physics of a katana.

It look similar to Cold Steel's Bagua Dao. therionarms.com/reenact/com327.htmlI think its an interpretive sword that took the look a the chinese broadsword as a basis but adjusted it to fit the feel they wanted for the movie.

Oh God... Dont get me started about king arthur. -bangs head against wall- After we watched this in class one week, I literally wrote a thesis to my teacher on why the entire movie was incorrect.
Cool sword tho.

Tristan (With an N in this movie) is the only reason why it's worth watching. Just because he's that cool.
I was so pissed when he died...

A lot of dao were hand and a half especially the oxtails which were not standardized military issue.

Garrettc: I thought the blade looked to thin, width wise, and it didn't have enough presence in the top 6 inches in the blade. It also doesn't seem to have enough swell.
Firehand: Karma for the picture, I am very much considering trying to get a sword like this either made or finding one because two handed and hand and a half are my favourite types as I don't have the wrist strength to manipulate one handed swords, except for chinese one handers. I also have very long arms so a hand and a half or two hander gives me a reach that is much longer than most peoples.
Luke: well that was a waste of time, considering what version of the Arthur story you are going by. This story was not supposed to be knights in plate armour or medieval, it was a story based on the roman commander Artorius it had a few of the more obvious myths thrown in like the round table but fairly believeable of the roman commander Artorius..

The blade looks like a Turkish pala actually.
Considering the Turkic peoples gave us the curved cavalry sword, I'd put my money on it being more an imagining based on the Turko-Mongol saber.

It's not "based" on anything. It's entirely fabricated. It's an interesting theory, but not one with a minutia of evidence to back it up. The only thing that makes it more "authentic" in my book is that there isn't really magic. That's about it.

Garrettc: I thought the blade looked to thin, width wise, and it didn't have enough presence in the top 6 inches in the blade. It also doesn't seem to have enough swell. I still maintain that it's an oxtail. Oxtails were made in a myriad of styles and that includes "refined" oxtails which were not as broad as the most common ones. All that oxtail means is a flared or in other words a thin flattened tip for shearing flesh vs. military patterns that had thicker tips to deal with armour in earlier periods. at stevenn, that is still definitely a Chinese sword. The round guard and handle are distinctly Chinese. The flared tip was very common in 19th century China. Also the dao is a derivative of the Turko-Mongol saber.

I agree with Garrettc that Tristan's sword is a dao and Tristan is my favorite character in the movie. The cold steel dao has a 7" handle and I can easily wield with two hands.

if this is set in the roman timeperiod, they majorly screwed up with the armor.
