Introduction:
Ahoy! Well, due to a spot of bad luck selling my Benchmade 551 and a spot of good luck on the timing end I wound up with a new(ish) knife. It is the Spyderco Delica 4 Black Blade, aka the C11BBK.
Now, I have really, really wanted this blade for a long time. I have a Delica 4 FFG(sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/42841/spyderco-delica-4-ffg) and I really like it. However, I like blades with coatings as it helps relieve oxidation issues and does not smudge or show fingerprints. Now I have a Delica 4 with a coated blade. Very happy camper.
Full Disclosure:
I did not buy this knife. I got it used in a trade with a member of forum member Slav's Facebook page, Griptilian Nation. If you love Griptilian's then this is an awesome page and I recommend you join. The member I got it from is Jamie Go Blue Endicott, and the trade was very quick and smooth as silk. It came well packaged with the three-day shipping.
I recently watched The Equalizer. Seems like Man on Fire meets Taken. Not bad, but I was let down a bit by the stylized perfection of his technique.
Specifications:
Blade Length: 2 and 7/8"
Blade Material: VG10
Handle Length: 4 and 1/4"
Handle Material: Fiberglass Reinforced Nylon(FRN)
Weight: 2.5oz
Lock Type: Back-lock
Country of Manufacture: Japan
First Impression:
Effin' love it!
Blade:
The blade is made of the excellent VG10 steel and is in the Spyderco Leaf shape. It is just under 3" long, has a flat saber-grind, and is partially serrated blade with a black titanium carbonitride coating. As this one was used, it has a few scuffs in the coating and the edge was a bit rolled. A few minutes with my DMT Aligner's EEF stone and it's back up to par. On one side is has the Spyderco and blade steel stamped, on the other the city and country of manufacture(Seki City, Japan).
I've found this combination of steel type and blade shape to be very excellent.
Opening:
Opening is achieved via the round Spydie-hole. Opening is smooth and quick.
Handle:
The handle is made of FRN. It is black and features Spyderco's bi-directional "Volcano" texturing, which is grippy without being abrasive. It has sunk in, skeletonized steel liners. It is held together by four t6 torx screws and a t9 torx pivot screw. The pocket clip is black with the Spyderco Spyder stamped on it. It is drilled for ambidextrous, four-way carry. Tension is perfect. You may also notice that Jamie tossed in a tasteful blue lanyard.
Centering is just about perfect.
Lock-up:
Back-lock with a Dave Boyle Dent. Good, tight lock-up with no movement.
Jimping:
Great jimping on the top of the handles spine and the thumb ramp made by the thumb hole. Great traction, but not uncomfortably abrasive.
Final Thoughts:
Well, I love it. I'm a big fan of the Delica, and this model clears up any issues I had with the FFG model. At this time, a new copy of this knife runs for $77 on Amazon. I do think that's a bit steep, hence my relucance to buy one new all this time. Aside from that, it is a delight. Very well made, made from top-notch materials, sharp, and is virtually unnoticeable in the pocket. Not too big, not too small. I very mcuh recommend it, especially if you can get it at a little less than top dollar.
Thanks for reading. Please feel free to shower me with adulation. Questions and comments are welcome, just bear in mind that I'm a moderator and a very powerful man on these boards.
