I’ve noticed a couple of forges who sell Han Dynasty Jian they have an option of either diamond or octagonal/secondary bevel cross sections. What are the advantages and disadvantages of both and which would be best suited for cutting practice? Where Han Jian the only ones that used octagonal cross sections or was it common through out China’s History?

From what I know a hexagonal shape is tougher while a diamond cuts better.

Secondary bevels have a wider edge which makes them more durable, but less sharp. Octagonal for forms, diamond for cutting.
