I thought I'd create this thread as when I was looking at this sword there was no real information or pictures around.
Hopefully this helps anyone thinking of buying this sword, this is my first "real" Katana.
I did get it at a discount 30% off, about $200AU.
It is made by Master Cutlery and is a "official" battle ready replica, like the Walking Dead sword, but that wasn't sharpened.
Technical details of the sword are:
Hand forged 1045 carbon steel blade
Full tang
Sharpened
Cord and authentic rayskin wrapped handle
Metal Asano clan tsuba
Wood scabbard with burgundy lacquer and black splatter finish
Comes with black sword bag and certificate of authenticity
Exact replica of the Sword used by the 47 Ronin
Measurements:
Blade: 27"
Overall: 40 3/4"
The Katana is heavy, not easily swung, the Hamon is wire brushed which seems they did AFTER sharpening the sword as there are burs alone the blade.
Don't get me wrong it passed the paper cutting test, but in some spots you can feel the blade "catch" the paper as it was cutting.
It went through a rock-melon (cantaloupe) fine, but only 1/2 way through a rolled up piece of cardboard, which for some reason left an instant black stain on the blade.
Standard cleaning techniques would not remove it, so I used some of the stainless steal cleaner I use on my display swords which got it straight off.
Left surface scratches after cutting too.
I would polish them out BUT because of the engraved and colored collectors number this make it impossible to do a proper polish.
Personally I wouldn't buy this sword for practical use, it's a good display sword, still needs oiling etc, but not really good for cutting unless you want to destroy the "collectors" feel of the sword.
Hope someone finds this information useful.
This pictures were taken straight out of the box after the first clean/oil:
