This afternoon, I worked with my son on tatami mat cutting. I don't get to train with him very often since he lives out of state, so since he was here for winter break, I thought I'd make the most of it and focus on combination cuts. I started off demonstrating a double with the ever reliable and capable Hanwei Rhinelander. Then after practicing upward and downward diagonal cuts, he performed a cut combination of his own. The first cut looked good enough that it could possibly have resulted in a double cut if it had been lower on the mat. He did well and we'll work on it again in the future.
Here's the video. Enjoy!

Nicely done the both of you! I'm starting to want one of those Rhinelanders.

Thanks Rick!
Yeah, the Rhinelander is a very good sword at a great price.

Great cutting as usual. Nice to see you're passing on your skills to your son. Once my daughter gets old enough (she's 8), I'll train her to use (and respect) swords too - she currently has a shoto I made out of a broken bokken.

Very nice! The Rhinelander is next on my list, I was working on a hilt design for the blade just earlier. How was the edge out of the box?

Thanks everyone! Very nice! The Rhinelander is next on my list, I was working on a hilt design for the blade just earlier. How was the edge out of the box? The factory edge was not so great. It couldn't quite cut a tatami mat. I spent some time sanding down the central ridge to give it a more lenticular shape, then I put a decent initial cutting edge on it using sandpaper. Later, I used my 1x30 belt sander to put a shaving sharp edge on it.

Sounds like typical Hanwei euro edge I guess - better than a Windlass edge at least!
