Anyone have any recommendations for a one hander with great handling for cut and thrust cutting practice? I am looking for anything from late viking transition to just pre renaissance, unfortunately I can't stretch to eg an albion caithness, so looking for maybe a hanwei or windlass alternative... Thanks in advance for any ideas or advice :-)

What's your budget?

Maybe £300-400, but if I can pay less for something that handles well I won't complain. It's a bit complicated by the fact I am in England so have to either pay higher English prices or pay for shipping and import duties/tax. My thing at the moment it collecting a wide variety of relatively inexpensive weapons to train and practice with, then later on getting higher end models of my favourites.

If I were you, I'd check out local dealers... you can check out the ones recommended by the SBG staff here: Sword Sellers in Europe.

Take a look at Valiant Armoury They are good, lively swords and you get a nice scabbard as well.

Check out the Albion Squire line and the squire line Viking swords offered exclusively through Viking Shield dot com. Albion has a European/English specific site but I don't know if Viking shield does
Good luck getting it in what with your constabulary trying to round up kitchen knives and such. Sounds like a real pain. I suppose if you will have to go through so much hassle might as well get an Albion and do it right the first time

I like the Windlass/MRL Oakeshott type XIV, and the price isn't bad. Not the BEST balance, but not half bad and it is decently priced (I got mine from KOA). If you can spend a bit more, the Valiant Armory "Bristol" has a bit better balance than the Windlass but is of similar size.

I'd also recommend the windlass type XIV. I was quite surprised by the balance, and the price is right.

Thanks everyone for the help, in the end I went with a Tinker Pearce early medieval one handed (which unfortunately is on backorder where I got it, so a bit of a wait still). After committing to that, I then became aware of the swords of might 40%off sale and ordered a hanwei cawood sword as well which should be with me tomorrow :-D
As much as I would love to get an albion, I can't get my head round spending ~$400 on a scabard, so until I get a bit more space to get a router and make my own those are not on the table. Plus as I said before at the moment I'm collecting a wide range of swords (and a few other things) then later I can save up longer and buy upgraded versions of my favourites :-)

That's why I love this forum, thanks :-) Downloaded and saved for when I get space and time^^ Unfortunately my house really isn't big enough for the people and things (I got raised eyebrows directed at me when I bought a belt sander) already in it, and two of the people have a lot more growing to do...
