So I have a couple of questions on hilts, if I may. I just ordered a Windlass Sticklestad Viking Sword from KoA, and it got my questions going. I love the blade, the crossguard and the pommel, but the grip needs work. So...
1. How do you remove the pommel/hilt from a peened sword like this, and better yet, how do you re-attach it? I couldn't find instructions anywhere (I even tried youtube).
2. I did poke around here and saw a lot of DIY grips, almost all of them were gorgeous. But I was wondering why nobody seemed to make wrapped grips where the leather spiraled around the handle? You know, like a tennis racket. But on a sword. With leather. Whatever. Hopefully I got my question across. I thought that a grip made from spiraled leather would make good historical sense. If I'm Sven the Viking (or Francis the Frank, or Hans the Hun), I probably need to replace grips fairly often (relatively speaking) and in the field. Wouldn't they have more than likely wrapped the hilt spirally then do the fancy new hilts? Would there be any reason not to do this?
Thanks!

If I were doing it, I would not remove the pommel or the guard. In your case there really is no need if all you want to do is change the grip. First thing you could consider is reusing the current grip but just rip off the current leather on there and get down to the wood, once there you can regrip it anyway you want. If you have a need to remove the entire grip, then I would split the grip off the tang...use a chisel or carefully saw it to the point where you can split it off.
If you really nned to remove the pommel and guard you will need too grind the peen off, then the pommel can lift off and then you can work the guard off. The guard on that model is probably held in place with epoxy and the force of the grip being compressed against it by the pommel, which is now gone.
Putting it back together is going to prob. be a bit harder b/c you will have to re-peen, so we are talking a hammer, heat from a torch (nice but not always totally needed) and some time, especially if you are cold peening (no heat)...lots of hits with a pall peen hammer, like thousands to mushroom the tang into a peen. There are other ways as well using pommel nuts etc but with that model you would have to work on that pommel even further.
As far as a spiral wrap...I don't see why you couldn't.
