Hey all. I'm in the market for a budget cutter that still looks good. I've seen a lot of things I'm looking for from both Huawei and Ryan Sword and was wondering if there were any recomendations from the community. A nice shirasaya mount is what I'm after right now so the quality of fittings is not really a deciding factor. Thanks.

I echo our fellow forumites - Huawei is far above Ryan. No doubt about it.

One thing members haven't posted - Ryanswords has a tendency to rip off other people's/company's original work and sell knock offs. Huawei is the better option imho.

RyanSword is a long time disliked distributor around here. Back in the day, there were several videos and reviews floating around about how terrible these guys were. Just aweful stuff. Anywhere from super-poorly assembled parts to blades that hadn't even been heat treated. That was mostly when we were on the old Proboards site, though. They may have improved since then, but I, personally, still wouldn't buy from them today.

As others said, if the choice is between those two, Huawei hands down. I would never buy from Ryan Sword.

Thanks all. Seems like my choice is a rather simple one.

Yeah I don't think you will find anyone hear that would recommend Ryan Sword. Especially not over Huawei. Huawei is the best of the ebay vendors.

If I was the president of China, Ryan sword would be illegal. And Jacky (Huawei), prime minister.

Ryan sword has a bad reputation from a long time ago. And that needs to change. I have purchased two swords from ryan. The first one was a basic 1095 through hardened with fuller, and I posted the review here. The katana held up through many trees, water bottles, railroad ties, and even tests on the fresh remains of deer. It had a heavy cutting geometry and did very well until I took it to a steel drum, that's what finally did it in. I then ordered a second 1095, I told him what I had done to the blade and he still gave me a 25% discount on my next purchase. The second blade was completely custom done. It was the furniture from his tactical katana with a custom blade in 1095 also through hardened. Unfortunately this sword took a beating in shipping and came with a cracked handle. Ryan made a third sword for free and is shipping it to me tomorrow, also custom furniture though this time I requested the short tactical blade. I have wrapped the damaged blade with leather and taken it to T posts and steel barrels. The blade is taking ships from the T post but has not cracked or split after repeated strikes. I plan to purchase a katana from Huawei to compare, but if one likes the ryan sword offerings, I don't think you will be let down. Fit and finish has been great, and he has emailed me on every detail of every sword I have purchased not shipping until it's exactly how I want. Again, Huawei may be better, I don't know..but Ryan is far from where he was and the products he's making are IMHO very good these days. Customer service is amazing and that means a lot. I've been very impressed and my next sword from him will be a bit nicer looking and not be used to cut chain link fence and steel barrels, I think I've torture tested his stuff quite enough.

You can like RyanSword all you want to, and that's fine and dandy. But that doesn't mean we have to. The reason we reccomend the eBay vendors we do is because we've been around and heard all the horror stories and seen all the masterpieces to come out of them. Certain vendors give you better quality for your money. Plain and simple. Plus, some vendors listen to you, and some just tell you what you want to hear to get you to buy their stuff. In the dealings I had with this "Ryan" guy, I can tell you he doesn't sound like a guy I'd want to purchase from.
Why on earth you would want to go and ruin your T10 kat like that, is beyond me. Seems like a waste of money, but it's your sword. And just because you beat it to death doesn't automatically make it a good sword. There's a lot more to it than that. Better polishes, geometric yokote, fit and finish, quality wrap, etc.
The bottom line is: I'm glad you like your sword. But most of us will never buy from them/him due to past experiences.

Never said you had to, just saying my experience with him. I think his name, or at least the name of the guy I've dealt with is Gong. It's not really about telling you what you want to hear, it's about the fact that he's used the items I wanted and made the sword in the way I wanted. It's nice to order something and get what you asked for and though his english is broken, he'll keep working with you till it comes out right. As for why I did the torture test. I was curious about how much it could take. People talked about blades taking set, and edge roll and improper heat treatments. So I was curious, the sword did not set on bends, and really held up well to rough abuse. As to the second sword, cracked grip on delivery and as it was a custom blade I wasn't able to find a handle to fit it well. As Gong sent me a second sword as replacement, I basically had a free blade that I couldn't mount much onto. So I turned it into a beater. Now that I'm comfortable with the toughness of the blades I don't feel the need to torture test any future blades and can look for something a bit nicer for more standard cutting that won't cause damage. No beating it to death doesn't make it a good sword, but it does deal with the issues of temper. On his fit an finish, his wrap is tight, of the standard repeating pattern, not the alternating that holds up better. For the price he makes a serviceable blade. I'm again not saying he's better than the others recommended. In fact I plan to purchase my next cat from either huawei or sword001 so I can compare side by side.
