Some production knives are inexpensive but very well made, while others (still considered production knives) are extremely expensive and are works of art as well as tools. So, what's the most you would actually spend on a production knife?

That's tough. I'm super poor, but quality counts and my knives are the one area where I actually care enough to spend a bit extra for a better piece. I'll say $100-$150, with it being a lot closer to $100 realistically. My Mini Griptilian's broke me of my previous lower price barrier, hahaha.

If one includes kitchen knives, then IIRC I've paid a little over $200 (the knife retails for $299 locally these days). About $200 isn't that much to spend on a good kitchen knife, especially if you will use it every day, or almost every day, for more than 10 years.
I look at good production knives, kitchen and other, in the $300-$400 range and think "That's very nice, but ...".

The most I've ever spent on a knife (catch and release) was $625 - a Hinderer XM-18 Wharncliffe I ended up selling for $725 a week after I got it. The most I've spent on a personal knife was $600, also a Hinderer, but in a Spanto grind instead. There's a niche market for high end knives, and I think that prices on some models will go up, while others might come down, seeing as Hinderer made a major investment recently to make a new production facility that's several times bigger than their previous building.

I guess I never really considered a Hinderer a production knife. I prefer to keep my production knife purchases under $200; though I cannot say that I've never spent more than that. (I'm assuming I have, but I can't name one off the top of my head)

You probably have - what about MBB? Scratch that - they're more custom than production. OK, what about the most expensive ZT knife? I've seen you post many times about them.

I do have a number of ZT knives...but I'm pretty sure they were all under $200. I got the 0300 and 0560 as like new, but still "used", on eBay; so they were under $200. Unless you are going to count the 0350 with the M390 blade, to which I added a set of Cuscadi ironwood scales...but a good part of that cost was the custom scales (not the knife itself).

Yeah, those are aftermarket additions, so I don't think that would count. Oh well, maybe you'll think of something BTW, ZT is discontinuing a bunch of their knives - I'll post about it later in a different thread. OK, getting back to the OP, SBG members, what are your preferences when it comes to prices?

I used to collect custom knives in the mid to late 70's. Getting married in 1980 put an end to that but back then I spent about $500 for custom several times. Many of today's production are at the level of customs back then and with inflation a $ 500 custom then would equate to about $2000 now.
I have a goodly amount of blades and really don't need any more. That in mind I have purchased several quality productions in the past year or so around the $200 mark.
You can see many productions are a great value today. You just need to do some research before dropping the big bills.
