I recently received this young thang (Tinker bastard blade with VA's Templar guard and Malatesta pommel and new grip) And I love it...except for one thing. The cross guard rattles something awful. On closer inspection, the guard can rotate in the direction of the blade flats. The guard was made for a different blade, so I can forgive this, but it wouldn't been nice to know before it was shipped. I took the pommel off (hex nut assembly), but I had some difficulty getting the grip off, so I just put everything back together rather than trying to force it. Is there an easy way to fix this? The rattling is really holding this baby back. Keep in mind I don't have a ton of specialized tools lying around (no belt sander, dremel, etc), and I haven't really done any sword-related DIY stuff before. Would really appreciate some assistance!

No previous owner. I bought a new H/T bare blade off KoA and had them ship it straight to Sonny at the CSS.

So you're the owner of that lovely blue and black sword I saw on the FB page. When you say rattling guard, does the guard move around and make noises even when the assembly is tight? I remember trying to fit a HT bastard blunt blade into the sharp version hilt and it the guard wouldn't stay steady so to speak and rattled.
I had to take some sandpaper and "flatten out" the blade shoulder area just a bit so that the surface was even, took a long time and was not fun. Especially when you're trying to keep the rounded shoulder part but too much curvyness made the fit really bad.
I 2nd the notion to contact Sonny about this. Though it pains me to say this, all these new sword orders is causing quality controls to slip a bit... my Malatesta I got back recently which had the blade replaced wasn't tightened properly and I needed to use my screw driver to tighten that nut, and a wooden shim, and a snip here and there so the leather wouldn't cover the keyed part of new blade tang :/

It was remiss of him not to inform you the guard fit was off, but he is a very busy guy. Not a whole lot you can do without removing the grip. I doubt Sonny would epoxy the grip on if the sword has a hex nut assembly. Try removing the pommel and hammering the guard down using a rubber mallet, that should loosen the grip if it hasn't been glued.
