Hi Folks, I wonder if instead of ready-made Japanese nugui (iron oxide powder + choji oil mixture) that costs about $30usa for a little bottle, perhaps one can buy powdered iron oxide (aka "rust powder") and add some to choji oil (aka mineral oil with a little oil of cloves)? Ebay has iron oxide powder: www.ebay.com/itm/Black-Iron-Oxid ... 4ada84de3c Cheap this source. Buy and mix with choji oil. I would think it would work. Maybe try it on a T10 or 1095 budget katana first. RinC

Well, I can't answer the question, but I can offer the observation that experimentation does seem to be in the air.

Atrixnet, Well....happily, I have a couple budget blades, where I stopped the polishing stage at hazuya fingerstones (for some reason, their harder, modern steel blades liked hazuya fingerstones better than jizuya fingerstones) and so would be good candidates to experiment on.
Atrixnet, you got a new tsuba? Which one did you get? (just curious)

Many sword smiths make their own nugui with the metal dust they collect in their shops.

The following website is always a good source for me - here's what the togishi has to say about nugui: "NUGUI is a very fine stone powder mixed with oil. Polish the whole surface of the blade with it using cotton ball. In this step, the work is very different between the classical style and the modern style. The nugui work in the classical style is the final cleaning for the blade surface. The work in the modern style is to make up a good contrast for an attractive view. On the classical style, natural stones can be used for NUGUI. There are various kinds of stone for it, for example, NARUTAKI, NAGURA, TSUSHIMA, iron ore. The surface becomes clean and the hamon comes up. www.ksky.ne.jp/~sumie99/togi,process.html Just be aware though that some modern steels do NOT like nugui at all because of the alloys in them. Hopefully, your recipe will be a success. Pictures along with results, or else it didn't happen

I order to do sword polishing on the authentic samurai sword, nugui will do the final process making specifically when Specifically the hamon, jihada and any other hataraki that is present on the blade.
