Hello, I am looking at buying a dao sword from a Chinese ebay seller, and I asked for photos of the actual blade and tang. The blade itself is about 27 inches long according to the listing.
I received the attached pics along with a couple others of just the blade. These show the tang or part of it. I was wondering if this seemed sturdy enough to more knowledgeable eyes here. I take it the tail is threaded, and from most of the daos in this price range I've seen (<$200) the nut is underneath a pommel-cap that is usually glued on. Any comments? Thanks in advance.

Sorry, I saved them from the ebay message but they came out only as thumbs. I can't seem to save the attached photos except for thumbnail size pics, which basically makes my question impossible to answer. Ughhh.

As far as I can tell from the tiny pics, it looks OK.
Nut at the end of the grip, and either pommel that's glued on, or held on by a little nut. The most common potential problems are: (1) Tang just too thin (this one looks OK). (2) Too much space between tang and grip - hole in grip too large. Solution: fill with epoxy or epoxy putty (or some other filler). (3) Threaded section welded on, with poor weld. (4) Nut at end of grip too small.
(If all else fails, have the pics enlarged on your screen, take a screen shot, and crop to the pic.)

Oh my goodness! For 15 years I've never known how the heck to use that feature! That is super helpful- Thank you! I've tried again to get the pics. They aren't huge but they are usable, I think.

looks pretty bad, no reason a japanese style blade should have a tang like this; I wouldn't buy it.

In the 2nd picture showing the full tang, it looks substantial enough to be safe but looks awful messy on the surface. For the price under $200 it's to be expected but I'm curious, who is this ebay seller you are buying from? Also, the other concern I have is if the handle and fittings will be properly fitted to the tang or will it be a case of oversized "hollow round handle and rectangle/squarish tang" deal? Another area concerns the "tail" of the tang. It looks thin and un-keyed and when they thread it for that nut, I worry it will be overly threaded and the whole "tail" will be weak. The pommel and handle may even rest over the thin threaded "tail" on final assembly. Example of my concerns for potential problems with this sword That was a $444.54 sword from TCKRUAN88/Lyuesword who told me the tang and handle were perfectly fitted, but look how much threading they did on that tail and how far down the handle is fitted over... it's hollow enough to hold chopsticks. I fear to think what surprises a sub $200 dao may have.... Attachments:

The seller id is Quanwater and the price is $178. I don't teally have cut and paste ability at the moment ("typing" on a Nook tablet) or I would post the auction link.

I'm still thinking about this one, but comments seem to generally be that it's OK (thanks for that!). Plus, I ordered two katanas so am awaiting those deliveries from China and I don't need to buy this right away.
