So I'm not really sure where to put this so I'm putting it here. I have been looking at knives a lot recently, and many feature a "protective, glare reducing coating", which is often pretty much teflon (cold steel). It comes off very easily and doesn't do too much to protect the blade, but it does look cool while it lasts... Unfortunatly it doesn't last long. So I came across a type of coating called DLC, or Diamond Like Coating. I have seen it in spyderco and zero tolerance knives. It seems MUCH more durable than the typical black coating, and looks just as good. My question is, is there any way to have someone/some company put this coating on a blade I already have? Can anyone make a custom blade with it? Can I get ahold of it somehow and apply it? And finally, how much would that cost? Primarily I am looking at the CS Recon 1 tanto style, scraping off the teflon if it doesn't remove itself, and applying the DLC. Goes for the lock parts and whatnot so that everything matches.

There are other places around; but from what I've seen, a lot of them will only do bulk orders (ie 100 knives, or more). You could also look into having it Cerakoted.

Those other coatings look great but I would strongly prefer something black or dark grey. Cerakote- more info please? Never heard of it.

How durable is the coating, usually? Is it food safe?

I think the TiNi is the most durable coating right now, followed by DLC... Cerakote is also really durable. As for food safe, I couldn't answer that - your best bet is to call the companies and ask them yourself.

I have a Sanrenmu folder with tini coating and it has held up surprisingly well over the last year or so. I use this knife every day and have sharpened it about 5-6 times and the black is still looking good. There is a tiny bit of fading near the tip and only a few surface scratches that go all the way through. I was expecting it to scratch, flake, and fade like the black coating I used to have on some of my older knives back in the day.
