Hi!
I never cut anything, for now, I don't even have a cutting sword. But soon enough I will be getting one, for now, I just let my imagination run loose.
Does anyone practice against flying targets? Something like a partner throwing into the air tennis balls, baseballs, plastic bottles
Is it doable? Is it dangerous? Is it complete nonsense?

Here's a vid of a "modern day" Japanese Samurai doing some pretty amazing feats with his katana, including cutting flying objects like a small plastic pellet fired from an air pistol

Yeah, that's pretty impressive, seen these before. Regardless of his skill, the sword looks pretty thin in a cutting section. Look at the pea bean cutting - looks like what, 3mm cross section? That's something that might help in cutting these light beans and mushrooms clean. Still very impressive technique, especially regarding fast moving targets. As for cutting moving targets per se, I don't see why not? As far as your setup is safe and you are familiar with your distance, footwork and skillful enough not to harm yourself or anyone around - it might be a lot of fun. I know western cutting guys use tatami mounted on moving platforms in competitions - it is challenging and fun to watch too. Gotta try that myself someday .

Why not, but start with immobile targets. Just getting the footwork and edge alignment right and maintaining control throughout the strike is hard enough to begin with, and a static target has a significantly smaller chance of damaging your sword when (NOT IF!) you screw up. For one thing, tracking a moving target can take your attention away from what you yourself are doing. I've seen people stumble and fall just for focusing too intently on a ball or frisbee - thankfully never with a sword, so far... Me, I mostly just use a simple 4x4" length of wood balanced on its end as a cutting stand. It's challenging enough for now.

While I don't do moving targets currently some time ago I practised with a partner throwing grapes, got fairly good, ie. missed one or two in every 10, not sure my wrists would hold up now

At my last SBG cutting party, Vay was throwing oranges at his gfs to cut. Also when I visited ZT shop we were cutting beer cans in the air.

What would make good flying targets? Aside from fruits, my momma always told me not to play with my food

It's not your food if you're not gonna eat it.

Water bottles. Just make sure the person throwing them to you isn't aiming at you, but in front of you. Tried a few last weekend... satisfying to cut out of the air

Along with various fruits I had small chunks of tatami mat tossed in the air for me to cut before. Also fun are those plastic balls like the ones in the ball pit at chuckie cheese or the rings from around milk jugs for targeting practice without getting your sword dirty.

Remembering most fruits will quickly rust your blade, so a good wash and oil after a session is a must

Also at Razor's last SBG cutting party, someone unexpectedly (gently) tossed a cut segment of tatami toward me. Got cleanly through about 3/4ths of it before matched the speed of my downward cut and dropped to the ground. That's the only time I've cut something in the air but I've kinda been wanting to try it more ever since...

I've cut bottles and tatami mat pieces thrown at me. I don't think it teaches anything cutting stationary targets doesn't but it's fun
