I bought some do it yourself knife kits (plastic and wood models) for my daughter's 8th birthday. She absolutely LOVED them - I helped her assemble them, and was explaining to her the importance of safety while putting them together. We also talked about safety, and also about how she should open, hold, and close the knives properly. Her mom took the pics, she also loves knives btw. If any are interested in getting some for your kids, PM me for pricing. ** Glowing parents **

Loving that happy smile holding up the knives. Great gift for your girl. She will likely grow up being one of the few left out there who knows how to use a knife and how to do it safely since sadly these days parents don't let kids have knives and never teach them knife safety. Though I have to say I have found a lot more women getting into knives these days compared to back when I was growing up. So that is a nice trend, and there are a lot of women knife makers out there now too. LOL in another 100 years only women will be allowed knives if this keeps going.

Aside from teaching her knife safety, my wife and I feel it's important for her to explore her talents, including martial arts (3rd year), swimming (2nd year), dance (on and off 3 yrs), and a bevy of other activities she enjoys. Kids today grow up in a sedentary life, surrounding themselves with electronic devices that stifle growth instead of "doing things" like older pre-sat tv generations. I think having her do activities (both girly and not so girly) will help her become a better all around person. Learn how to do things/take care of yourself and you don't have to depend on others who might want to take advantage of you... just my .02 worth as a parent and HS teacher for 13+ years.

So when will she get her first steel knife?

That depends on her maturity and how she demonstrates being able to properly use these non-sharp sharps Maybe on her next birthday she'll get a nice 1st "real" knife. She'll eventually inherit most of my knives and swords too.

Fair enough. I've been giving my kids their first knife when they lose their first tooth. They do need to be safe and responsible or their knife gets taken away for a while, which I've only had to do once.
