I bought this sword from Kult of Athena a few years ago. I have no personal or professional relationship with Windlass or KOA.
Oakeshott Type XVIII Sword:
Overall Length: 41 3/4''
Blade: 34''
Weight: 2 lb 11 oz
POB: 4 1/2"
Thickness: 3.7 mm - 2.8 mm
Width: 1.9"
Grip Length: 5''
Assembly: Peened
XVIII Common Attributes:
◾Broad blade: 2-2.5"
◾Flattened-diamond cross-section along entire length
◾Slightly convex, tapering edges
◾Sharp point
◾Medium-length grip of 3.75-4" with raised central portion
◾Pommel of wheel or scent-stopper form
◾Curved cross
Type XVIII blades are broad at the base, They are of flattened or hollow-ground diamond sections. The blades taper to a strong thrusting point and sometimes feature a pronounced central ridge. The blades profile is slightly convex and has a decent width at the Center of Percussion.
Kult of Athena Manufacturer Description: The Oakeshott Type XVIII Sword features a tempered high carbon steel blade with slight hollow ground. The guard and pommel are solid steel, while the grip is wood with a brown leather wrap. Includes a wood scabbard with brown leather wrap and matching sword belt.
Impressions: I bought this sword from KOA and sharpened it myself and redid the grip wrap. I personally really like this offering from Windlass. It has a good stiff blade and feels very good in hand. It appears this sword has the heft and good balance to do some damage. It is not a lightweight and not heavy. The point is not very narrow but is enough to perform thrusting well especially with the stiff blade. The blade has a slight hollow grind which you normally do not see at this price point. I have found no issues with this sword over the few years I have owned it and think it is a bargain for what KOA sells these for.
Cons: Center ridge on blade is slightly wavy in places. At the price this sword sells for, I really see no other cons.
