I have always wanted a larger version - partly as counterpoint to the smaller original sword designed for a woman, like CF sheildmaiden.
Go a bit bigger and name it sheildMAN would be my advice. Would love to see how the shapeways stuff looks in person!

if Mr Swiger could post how wide the shieldmaiden guard is, that'd be great

Don't size it up any, I think the size is just fine.

finished carving the knotwork on the central ring. I'm going to need one of those magnifying glass stands. As for the guard, I think I'm going to scale the width from 12.75cm to 13.4cm. It's a slight amount that's noticeable but doesn't affect the proportions too much. The pommel I'll keep as is

The Shieldmaiden is not a small sword for a woman. The fittings and blade are full size.

my apologies, I was trying to be a little funny there with the woman/man thing. I am sure it will look good either way mate!

I'd agree the guard width does need to be a bit wider, fantastic work!

 I do think the Rob Miller fittings are on the smallish size.

I agree, from picture references I'd guess the guard span of the Rob Miller suontaka is roughly 12cm. The quiet press one is 10.4cm, and Jeffrey Robinson's one is 13.65 (but the blade he uses is wider than the Albion X).

I would agree that you should scale the guard up just a bit. In the photos, the pommel appears to be just a tad too large in comparison. Another 1/4 inch to the guard would be good, in my opinion.
Are the slots in the fittings at their final dimensions or will they be altered later? The slot in the guard seems too squared at the shoulder and the slot in the pommel is very narrow.
I have to admit to feeling a bit conflicted about projects like this. On the one hand, I think the new 3d printing technology is very cool and I like seeing what can be made on a computer translated into the real world. On the other hand, I'm a bit saddened to see hand sculpting being set aside in favor of computer rendering.
In any case, I like what you've done and especially like the changes you've made from the originals in the case of how you've done the animal heads.

Thanks BB, your advice really means a lot to me. I'm planning to have the hilt set sent off to the foundry for molding and casting at the end of July (I'm aiming to finish this project before September so I have time to prepare for my exams), hopefully I'll have the bare blade handy before then just to make sure the fit is fine. In any case I plan on rounding off the area where the blade shoulders meet the tang. The fit should be quite close as it is, there is a reasonably detailed description of the tang here: www.myarmoury.com/talk/viewtopic.php?t=26374I feel where you're coming from BB. I'm only doing the last mile carving of the knotwork details, but the amount of time and effort its taken me so far puts me in complete awe of sculptors who do everything from scratch. I really hope there continues to be a market for old school artists like yourself, it'd be a crying shame if hand sculpting was a dying art. I'm definitely planning on using 3d printing in future projects, right now I'm toying around with the idea of making a complex hilt set for the albion xviii bare blade. P.S In case it's of interest to anyone, I'm pretty sure that the CF shield maiden hilt is also built using 3D printing.

Finally got round to carving the knotwork for the pommel which took roughly five hours. The new guard should be with me on Monday. Hopefully I'll have everything off to the foundry by the weekend. some WIP pics:

fin. I will be sending these to a foundry for casting next week; I should recieve the finished bronze hilt parts 2 weeks there after. I plan on selling additional copies of the furniture for a short amount of time at 340usd for a raw set, and 410usd for a polished and patina'd set (including international shipping from Australia). Australian buyers: 350aud for a raw set, and 425aud for a polished and patina'd set. Sorry it's a bit more expensive than anticipated, didn't factor in shipping and GST.
