does anyone know where i can get 5160 spring steel in less than 1/4" thickness? im working on a sword that should be no more than 3/16" at its thickest point, and grinding down a big 1/4" piece of steel is incredibly wasteful and would take hours of unnecessary work. ive already emailed Admiral, they were only able to offer 5150 in 22 foot lengths....i only need like 48"

McMaster-Carr.com 212in up to 2 1/2in wide, you'll ahve to get a 72in piece. They only have it in 12, 36 and 72in lengths.

Don't know why you need 3in wide, 2 1/2in should be plenty wide enough. Any ways good luck finding the steel I know of no place that sales 5160 under 1/4in 3in wide.

I would take him out of it so it will be a better handing sword.

its a fantasy sword, hes more interested in the nostalgic feels, but the sword itself wielded great. i had one made in 1095 but it recieved a fatal flaw crack in heat treat. i thought maybe 5160 would be a better option this time around.

Aldo has 1084 and 80CrV2 in thicknesses just over 3/16" in 3" wide pieces. I like the 80CrV2 a lot and use it quite a bit now. If your steel is cracking in the heat treat, it likely has more to do with the preparation of the steel or your heat treat technique than it does the steel itself.
